Victrola’s Hi-Res Carbon & Hi-Res Onyx Turntables Support aptX Adaptive: CEDIA 2023

Should wireless turntables be labeled as hi-res? Let’s examine and determine what Victrola is offering.

Victrola Hi-Res Carbon Turntable Lifestyle

Following up on its previously released Sonos-enabled Stream Carbon and Stream Onyx, Victrola expands its high-fidelity wireless turntable product line with the launch of its ‘Hi-Res’ premium turntables. Although these new entries don’t provide Sonos integration, they do provide support for Qualcomm aptX Adaptive Bluetooth.

For traditional listening, the Hi-Res models also feature gold-plated RCA outputs for self-powered wired speakers or integration into stereo or home theater audio systems.

Tip: The terms hi-res or high resolution audio can be confusing and are often misused. They typically refer to digital audio that’s recorded, stored and played back at sample/bit rates higher than CD (44.1kHz/16-bit). Vinyl records are analog and simply cannot store that much resolution. In addition no Bluetooth audio codec can perfectly transmit 44.1kHz/16-bit (bit-for-bit). Victrola’s use of the term “hi-res” refers only to its implementation of the aptX Adaptive Bluetooth codec for wirelessly connecting its turntables to headphones or speakers that must also support aptX Adaptive. Such connectivity does not make the audio itself “hi-res”, but may offer less or imperceptible signal loss over other wireless connection methods. A wired connection would still be better. Perhaps Victrola is suggesting you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference when using aptX Adaptive.

Shared Features

The Victrola Hi-Res Carbon (Model VPT-2500) and Hi-Res Onyx (Model VPT-1500) feature a low-resonance veneered MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) plinth as well as premium metal turntable components and platter. Both turntables also include a switchable pre-amp with traditional analog RCA outputs, an auto-stop sensor to prevent stylus wear, and custom-designed, removable headshells.

From Scott Hagen, CEO of Victrola: “As music lovers ourselves, we understand the importance of delivering the most authentic and immersive audio experience possible. That’s why we’re thrilled to introduce our new Hi-Res Carbon and Onyx turntables with aptX Adaptive Bluetooth technology, offering unparalleled audio quality for both wired and wireless listening…With so many higher-end audio brands creating incredible wireless headphones and powered speakers we felt it was time to introduce a turntable suitable for these products.”
