Total Access 5000 Positions Carriers for Move to Converged Networks
Revolutionary Platform Offers IP/Ethernet Core, Reducing Operations Costs for Delivery of Next-
Generation and Legacy Services
HUNTSVILLE, Ala.–(March 20, 2006)–ADTRAN, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADTN), a leading supplier of next-generation network
solutions, today announced the Total Access 5000 Multi-Service Access and Aggregation Platform. This platform
revolutionizes converged networking by enabling service providers to deliver next-generation services like IPTV and Voice
over IP (VoIP) across an all IP/Ethernet core without stranding their legacy service base, thus creating a scalable service
delivery model across the network.
“Our access strategy is focused on providing a full suite of broadband platforms enabling a wide range of services. This
strategy has been successful with deployments of our products by every major wireline service provider in the U.S. as well
as a growing number of global carriers,” said Jay Wilson, vice president of product marketing, ADTRAN Carrier Networks
Division. “Today, carriers are focused on network convergence, which is driving the evolution of their broadband networks
to optimized transport, aggregation and the latest access technologies. The Total Access 5000 is the perfect solution to
address these market needs.”
Offering a pure IP/Ethernet core, the Total Access 5000 provides both emerging and existing service interfaces over
copper and fiber, easily supporting even the most bandwidth intensive applications. It provides a scalable architecture that
is designed to migrate with the network, providing flexible copper and fiber termination options. In addition, the Total
Access 5000 offers uplink into both legacy and next-generation core networks, including support for both TDM and VoIP
switches. Its ability to convert traditional voice and legacy data to IP provides carriers with a platform that seamlessly
integrates with IP Multimedia Subsystems (IMS) standards.
“Today, carriers are looking for ways to increase revenues and lower operational costs as they roll out advanced, IPbased
services,” said Jeff Heynen, directing analyst, Broadband and IPTV, Infonetics Research. “ADTRAN is addressing
this need with the Total Access 5000. This product intelligently supports both emerging and legacy services using an
IP/Ethernet core, allowing carriers to quickly and easily transition to converged networks.”
The Total Access 5000 supports a wide range of network applications including IP DSLAM, broadband loop carrier, Fiber
to the Node (FTTN), Metro Ethernet services via both fiber and bonded copper, access and aggregation, media gateway
and future support for fiber to the premises (FTTP). Key global, standards-based technologies are being integrated into
the product, such as Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM), ADSL2+, VDSL2, Resilient Packet Ring (RPR), Pseudowire
Emulation Edge-to-Edge (PWE3), and Gigabit Passive Optical Networking (GPON).
The Total Access 5000 is supported by ADTRAN’s Total Access Element Management System (EMS) for integrated
operational support. This industry-proven system utilizes an all-Java architecture to provide configuration, performance,
network assurance, accounting, and security functions for ADTRAN’s Total Access Systems, OPTI systems, and MX
products.
The Total Access 5000 is available in a 23-inch chassis for domestic applications as well as a 19-inch chassis for
international applications. This product is currently shipping.
