Sonance will unveil a new series of in-ceiling speaker models designed exclusively for home-theater audio-video systems. The new models join the existing in-wall speaker lineup in the Sonance Cinema Series now adding more options for home theater enjoyment.
The Sonance Cinema Series in-ceiling models LCR1S (left/center/right), SUR1S (surround), and LCR.5S (left/center/right for 5.1 systems) are designed to provide outstanding performance while maintaining a slim ceiling profile. A Cabinet LCR1 model is also available for applications in which in-wall installations are not practical. All Cinema Series speakers are tonally matched so the designer can mix and match In-ceiling, In-wall and Cabinet models without affecting the reference clarity or realism of the sound, even in the largest home theaters.
Beautiful Aesthetics
Featuring the industry-leading Visual Performance micro-trim grille, the Cinema Series speakers blend top-of-the-line performance with unparalleled aesthetics. All Cinema In-ceiling models feature non-resonant enclosures of 3/4″-thick MDF, a high gloss black finish for the LCR1S/SUR1S and a matte black textured finish for the LCR.5S, that performs much like a high-performance box speaker set into the wall or ceiling. The rigidity and density of the MDF fully captures the sound from the back of the speakers, minimizing sonic colorations as well as the intrusion of sound into adjacent rooms.
Unique 3-Way Design
The LCR1S and LCR.5S incorporate an inverted-V three-way design featuring a midrange and tweeter that can be directed toward the listening area, and an angled woofer that can be positioned toward the video screen, thus eliminating perceived out-of-sync distortion between picture and sound. The same inverted-V design is used in the SUR1S to provide diffused surround sound. The baffle of each speaker features a damping pad that absorbs reflections generated by the midrange, increasing the level of sound quality.
Coaxial Midrange Tweeter Drivers
The new Cinema LCR1S, LCR.5S, and SUR1S speakers feature a coaxial driver to reproduce the midrange and high frequencies. The tweeters for all the in-ceiling models is 1″ (25mm) silk dome, ferrofluid-cooled and the LCR1S utilizes a 4″ (100mm) carbon fiber/Rohacell laminated midrange cone with rubber surround. The SUR1S features dual 3″ (76mm) carbon fiber/Rohacell laminated midrange cones with rubber surrounds. The LCR.5S incorporates a 4″ polypropylene midrange cone with a rubber surround. A shallow midrange cone with a low-profile surround was chosen to eliminate any compromise in the performance of the tweeter, which is located at the center of the midrange cone–a configuration that provides consistent off-axis frequency response regardless of the listening axis. Loudspeakers equipped with coaxial drivers also produce consistently accurate reproduction of tone regardless of which room they are used in.
Dual Woofers
The Cinema Series In-ceiling speakers feature dual woofers for the LCR and SUR models–two 5-1/4″ (133mm) carbon fiber/Rohacell laminated cones for the LCR1S and SUR1S. The LCR.5S incorporates two 5-1/4″ (133mm) polypropylene cones with rubber surrounds. In typical installations using single woofer designs, sound reflected off the walls and ceiling can cause dips in the frequency response of up to 6dB. These dips are minimized with the Sonance Cinema Series, as two woofers create unequal distances from reflective surfaces. The maximum amount of cancellation that can occur with a dual woofer speaker is 3dB. This, combined with the coaxial driver, produces a speaker with the highest degree of sonic accuracy and the lowest sensitivity to placement in the room. Power handling for the LCR1S is 150W with an SPL of 90dB,) for the LCR.5S 125W (88dB); and for the SUR1S, an impressive 200W (92db).
“The technologically advanced design and superior quality of materials used in the Sonance Cinema Series have resulted in a line of speakers that provide a level of performance that will satisfy the most demanding listeners,” says Todd Ryan, Chief Speaker Engineer at Sonance.
In addition to providing outstanding audio performance at an affordable price, the Sonance Cinema Series In-Ceiling speakers take into consideration the construction of the ceiling. A new two-piece RotoLock design (patent-pending) is compatible with a variety of joist configurations, and permits the installer to remove a portion of the toggle feet, depending on the type of construction. This takes into consideration standard TJI 110/210 joists, as well as silent-floor TJI 230/360/560 joist construction.
