Work From Home with the Shure SRH440A And SRH840A Headphones

Shure has been quite busy to start 2022 with multiple headphone releases. The Shure SRH840A and SRH440A are price below $150.

Following the release of the Shure AONIC 40 wireless noise-cancelling headphones, the brand has announced two new affordable second generation wired models for home or studio use. The new SRH440A and SRH840A over-ear headphones have arrived for $99 and $149, respectively.

The 2022 Series of the SRH440A and SRH840A headphones (2nd gen) offer an upgraded design and nuanced improvements like lower harmonic distortion and more precise left-right driver matching.

Note: The first generation models were labeled without “A” in the model name.

Both the Shure SRH840A and SRH440A are optimized for critical listening and studio monitoring but have their own unique tonal balance. Until we try both, we can’t comment on the accuracy of Shure’s claims but they are clearly aiming that at two different customers.

The SRH840A offers a precisely tailored frequency response that delivers rich bass, a clear midrange, and extended highs.

The SRH440A is more of a studio headphone with a more neutral tonal balance with an emphasis on detail retrieval and transparency across the entire frequency range.

We have a lot more experience with Shure’s IEMs so it will be interesting to see if they share the “house” sound or not.

“This upgrade delivers a low-profile design that looks great on camera and improved acoustics to ensure clean, and consistent audio reproduction. Recording professionals and content creators will benefit from professional headphones that include Shure’s iconic sound signature and a fresh, modern design,” said Sean Sullivan, Global Product Manager, Listening Products, at Shure

For $100 more, customers may consider the Shure AONIC 40, if noise cancelling is needed. However, they’re equipped with different drivers entirely and are tuned for the on-the-go traveler. We’ll have more to say once we get these in for review. But if someone doesn’t want or have a use for the many features on AONIC 40, the SRH440A or SRH840A could certainly be a good wired option.

Both the SRH440A and SRH840A also incorporate these features and benefits:

  • Ultra-Comfortable Lightweight Headband – Superior comfort for extended use. The closed-back, circumaural design rests comfortably over the ears and reduces background noise for long-wearing comfort over extended periods.
  • Sleek, Durable Design – The new industrial design with matte finish looks great on camera and withstands the rigors of constant use.
  • Included Accessories: A detachable, straight 9-foot locking bayonet cable; and a threaded gold stereo 1/8” to 1/4” adapter. A straight cable is now standard for both models to offer more mobility in creative spaces.
