Samsung TVs are very popular, and they are releasing a lot of new models for 2022, but they also make a lot of other products, including some innovative PC monitors. For 2022 Samsung is updating their Smart PC Monitor line with the M8 Series.
So, why are we talking about a PC monitor on eCoustics? The answer is that the M8 offers features that both PC users and TV viewers will like. Let’s take a closer look at the Samsung M8 series and see if it is right for you.
Size & Resolution
The Samsung M8 Smart Monitor is being offered in one screen size (32-inches) with 4K UHD resolution.
Slim Design
The M8 has a space-saving stylish design with a depth of only 11.4mm. This is 75% slimmer than the previous Samsung smart monitors.
You Don’t Always Need to Turn Your PC On
Although the M8 is a great companion for the PC environment, it has a lot of features that you can use without even turning your PC on.
Tip: A remote control is included.
With the built-in Samsung TIZEN OS, you can connect the monitor to several IT devices through its Smart Hub, similar to what you can do with a Samsung Smart TV.
Also, with its Workspace feature, users can remotely access another PC, use Microsoft 365 programs, and connect to Samsung mobile devices with Samsung DeX for seamless working.
You can also use the M8 to access Microsoft 365 without connecting to a PC.
In addition to HDMI connectivity, two USB Type-C ports are also included for added convenience.
Tip: The HDMI port on the M8 is micro-HDMI.
Streaming
You can also use the M8 to stream your favorite content from services, such as Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV+, YouTube, and more, simply by connecting the M8 directly to your home network and internet with its built-in WiFi connection option. The M8 also supports Apple AirPlay 2 and Bluetooth (4.2).
Tip: The M8 includes Samsung TV Plus, providing access to almost 200 free live and on-demand streaming channels.
SlimFit Camera
Another interesting feature is the included SlimFit Cam that rests on the top bezel. The Slimfit Cam is attached to the monitor bezel magnetically makes it easy to attach and remove when needed without juggling or it falling off.
The camera features face tracking, auto-zoom, and also supports video chat apps such as Google Duo, allowing users to work remotely or engage in video conferencing at home or in the workplace.
IoT Hub
The Smart Monitor M8 includes an IoT hub called SmartThings Hub, where users can connect all their IoT devices wirelessly.
The SmartThings app allows users to track IoT devices throughout the house through the app’s intuitive control panel.
Voice Control
Another convenience of the M8 is the ability to use either Samsung Bixby or Amazon Alexa voice control via the embedded far-field voice microphone.
Tip: Google Assistant can be used if the voice commands are relayed through an external Google device.
It is important to note the microphone uses an Always-On Voice function. This means that the monitor will display conversation information on the screen when using Bixby, even if the monitor screen is turned off.
Display Support
As mentioned previously, the M8 is 32-inches in size and has a native 4K (UHD) display resolution. The native refresh rate is 60Hz.
To display images and video accurately, the display offers adaptive picture technology, enhancing viewer comfort by automatically adjusting display brightness and color temperature.
The M8 is HDR10 and 10+ compatible (Samsung does not support Dolby Vision). sRGB is supported up to the 99% level.
Audio
Unlike most PC monitors the M8 has a built-in speaker system (5 watts x 2). However, given the thin frame of the TV, the speaker system isn’t going to sound as good as a soundbar or external audio system, but if you are using an M8 in close quarters as a PC display, they might suffice.
Pricing & Availability
The Samsung M8 is available now for $699.99 at Amazon and Samsung.com in four colors including warm white, sunset pink, daylight blue, and spring green with matching stand. A height-adjustable stand (HAS) with tilt functionality is included.
Tip: That is a lot less than the Apple Studio Display ($1,599 at Adorama) which hasn’t been all that well-received by many!
