Samsung just announced a new wearable product that is worn like a necklace, but with attached earbuds, called the Gear Circle. The device is meant to be a companion to your smartphone, and is able to receive calls, listen to music, and make voice commands through a Bluetooth connection. It features a magnetic lock which clasps around the user’s neck when not in use, as well as a vibrate function to signal incoming calls and notifications.
Although Samsung appears to have invented a new category of wearable devices with this launch, I am not clear what problem this product solves. Just about every new in-ear headphone offers the same functionality with a click-button controller and microphone that are usually in-line on the cable. Also, it would be yet another device you’d have to recharge.
Price and Availability
The Samsung Gear Circle will be available in black or white in global markets, beginning October 2014. Price not yet announced.
