Qwest Communications International Inc. (NYSE: Q) is delivering on its promise to enhance and unify customers’ communications experiences by offering access to a free mobile e-mail service. The new service allows customers to receive and reply to e-mail from any text-messaging-capable wireless phone without subscribing to data plans or upgrading to smartphones. This service also lets customers stay connected to the people that are important to them and receive communications from multiple sources on their wireless phones.
This mobile e-mail service offers a particularly simple experience for Qwest Broadband customers because of a special contact management feature. Qwest Connect with Windows Live enables customers who subscribe to mobile e-mail through Qwest to use their Windows Live Contacts list to select only the contacts they would like to receive e-mails from on their wireless phone. Customers can then easily manage their preferences through simple site controls, decide which senders’ messages they want to have forwarded to their wireless handsets, specify how often they receive new messages and decide how much of a message’s total length they receive on their phone.
“Qwest wants to simplify customers’ lives by helping them access more communications and entertainment services in a single place,” said Frank Simanson, vice president of Product at Qwest. “With this mobile e-mail service, customers get a customizable and intuitive way to communicate while on the go.”
Qwest customers can sign up for free mobile e-mail by visiting qwest.teleflip.com. Site visitors will be asked to enter an e-mail address and password, then their wireless phone numbers to complete the activation.
Mobile e-mail is available with all new and existing wireless phones that are text message-enabled (SMS) and does not require users to purchase new hardware or upgrade software. There is no charge to sign up for this service, though standard text messaging fees apply for all e-mails received on wireless phones.
Qwest helps make this mobile e-mail service available through an exclusive arrangement with Teleflip, Inc. using their flipMail technology. The flipMail technology unifies the e-mail and Internet networks with cell phone networks utilizing the SMS data channel. Messages that users elect to receive from this service will contain a sponsor message.
