New 3G Windows Mobile 6 Global Smart Device Bridges Mobile Needs of Personal and Professional Lifestyles With Variety of Entertainment and Business Features
AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) and Pantech announced today that the eagerly anticipated Pantech duo is now available in the U.S. exclusively from AT&T. The device features the convenience of both a full QWERTY and a numeric keypad in one sleek 3G device.
The Pantech duo is a global smart device that takes “cool” to a higher level in redefining form and function. Boasting an innovative dual-sliding, double-keyboard design, the Pantech duo marks a new breed of mobile handset — created to address the lifestyle needs of both business customers and consumers. In addition, the UMTS/HSDPA-enabled Pantech duo is one of the first devices in the AT&T portfolio to be powered by the Windows Mobile 6 operating system. AT&T has the broadest portfolio of Windows Mobile devices of any U.S. carrier.
“Pantech has hit a home run with the Pantech duo’s trend-setting dual-sliding keyboards and other outstanding features that raise the bar in terms of looks and functionality,” said Kent Mathy, president, Business Markets Group, AT&T. “AT&T business and consumer customers alike now have a device that matches their form-factor preference — whether it’s a phone keypad or QWERTY keyboard — while providing an outstanding voice and data experience whether they are on the other side of town, across the country or halfway around the world.”
Using the Pantech duo, AT&T customers can enjoy an outstanding mobile broadband experience through AT&T’s BroadbandConnect network, which is available in more than 200 major metropolitan areas across the U.S. and features average download speeds of 600 Kbps (kilobits per second) to 1.4 Mbps (megabits per second). Outside the U.S., AT&T customers can use the Pantech duo on the largest international wireless footprint of any U.S. carrier. Customers can access e-mail and other data applications and browse the Web in more than 135 countries(1), and they can make or receive phone calls in more than 190 countries.
The Pantech duo redefines the way that users interact with their cell phones by responding to the long-standing need of customers for a handset that intuitively and stylishly transitions between their personal and professional lives and allows them to make phone calls or type with equal ease. The drop-down QWERTY keyboard is perfect for writing e-mail and editing Microsoft Word and Excel documents; the numeric keypad is ideal for sending quick texts and dialing on the run. A flip of the wrist brings users into contact with either keyboard and any mobile need. The lean design houses both keypads and a large color screen that measures only 4.02 inches tall, 1.97 inches wide and .83 inches thick.
Staying Entertained
With the Pantech duo, staying entertained has never been easier. Dynamic AT&T Mobile Music and CV services let customers manage a variety of multimedia libraries, download and play stereo-quality music, watch popular TV shows and view exclusive content from HBO, MTV, and ESPN, among others, on the handset’s robust 240 x 320 pixel screen. Also onboard are convenient and widely used features, such as Internet Explorer Mobile, Windows Media Player 10 Mobile and Stereo Bluetooth.
“The Pantech duo is a sharp, sophisticated and powerful product and is built to take full advantage of AT&T’s swift and extensive BroadbandConnect network,” said Jay Yim, chief marketing officer, Global Operations, Pantech Group Inc. “By combining full QWERTY and numeric keypads in the same eye-catching device, the Pantech duo is designed to slide between work and play environments by instinctively addressing the many needs of every user along the way. From the boardroom to a night on the town, the Windows Mobile 6-powered Pantech duo bridges all needs and delivers a solution that customers have been waiting for.”
Office on the Road
The operating backbone of the Pantech duo is Windows Mobile 6, which provides users with the familiar look and feel of their desktop computers at home or in the office. Included in the Pantech duo is Office Mobile, so people can view PowerPoint presentations, as well as view and edit Microsoft Word and Excel documents. Windows Mobile 6 also delivers the ability to view e-mail messages in their original rich HTML format with live links to Web sites and Microsoft Office SharePoint sites, which means that text and images are displayed as they would be on a Windows PC.
The Pantech duo and all Windows Mobile 6 devices include Microsoft’s Direct Push Technology for up-to-date e-mail delivery and automatic synchronization of Outlook calendars, tasks and contacts through Microsoft Exchange Server. The Pantech duo also will support System Center Mobile Device Manager, the comprehensive, enterprise-grade mobile management security and access server at around the time Mobile Device Manager is available in the second quarter of 2008. The product was announced last week by Microsoft at CTIA Wireless I.T. and Entertainment 2007.
“The smartphone market is growing exponentially as people recognize that these powerful phones can help them get more done whether at the office, at home or on the go,” said Pieter Knook, senior vice president, Mobile Communications Business, Microsoft. “The Pantech duo is the perfect companion for anyone who wants to stay connected to work, family, and friends as it offers a distinctive form factor, a familiar Windows Mobile experience and AT&T’s powerful 3G network, which makes it easy to browse the Web, send e-mail or enjoy your digital entertainment.”
In addition to having the ability to take the office on the road, the Pantech duo provides consumers with numerous methods to stay connected by offering a choice of personal e-mail and messaging options. These include the AT&T Xpress Mail push e-mail service, which supports most popular POP3/IMAP personal e-mail services; instant messaging capabilities; and the ability to send and receive multimedia messages with color videos and photos. Taking productivity one step further, the Pantech duo leverages the unique capabilities of UMTS/HSDPA technology from AT&T, which allows for the simultaneous transmission of voice and data services so that users can make voice calls while sending e-mail or browsing the Web.
