Statement from Morgan Gillis, Executive Director of LiMo Foundation, on the new Motorola ROKR EM30
LiMo Foundation is excited about the announcement Motorola issued today of another LiMo handset, which immediately follows and complements our August 4 announcement of seven additional new LiMo handsets from Motorola, NEC and Panasonic Mobile Communications. The new Motorola ROKR EM30 becomes the 22nd handset model available using the LiMo Platform, the industry’s first collaboratively developed, Linux-based operating system for mobile devices.
The highly anticipated ROKR EM30 — Motorola’s eighth LiMo handset — is a GSM quad-band phone that supports global roaming and offers an exciting set of compelling music features. The ROKR EM30 is expected to launch first in Taiwan then in other markets throughout the quarter. Building upon the success of the ROKR E8, the EM30 is targeted for mass-market consumers worldwide and includes improved features including an LCD display, easier D-pad navigation and built-in GPS functionality to enable an array of location-based services.
Motorola’s announcement of this device gives further evidence that industry unification around the LiMo Platform can support varied functionality providing an enhanced mobile experience for consumers around the globe. Christy Wyatt, Vice President Software Platforms and Ecosystem, Motorola said: “Motorola is pleased to collaborate with our peers in the industry to develop the LiMo Platform based on market-proven technology, such as that in the ROKR EM30. We believe that LiMo enables our developer partners, operator customers and distributors to participate in a broader, richer Mobile Linux ecosystem and deliver greater innovation to our customers.”
