LG is bringing a lot to CES 2025, and that includes the LG UltraGear GX9 series OLED gaming monitors. The new lineup includes the 45GX990A – winner of three CES 2025 Innovation Awards, including the prestigious ‘Best of Innovation’ – and an all-in-one smart gaming monitor powered by LG webOS.
The GX9 series is designed to provide an advanced, high-quality gaming experience.
To support optimized gaming immersion, the UltraGear GX9 series models feature curved display panels employing LG’s WOLED technology (with MLA). The screens provide high brightness, absolute black levels when needed, accurate color, and an optimized curvature.
The GX9 series is certified for low blue light emissions, supporting a more comfortable experience and eye strain reduction during extended gaming sessions. In addition, LG’s Anti-Glare & Low Reflection (AGLR) coating minimizes screen reflections and glare, making for a less distracting viewing experience – especially important for gaming where anything that detracts from what needs to show on the screen can result in a losing situation.
The 45GX990A and 45GX950A are 45-inch, 21:9 gaming monitors featuring ultra-high 5K2K resolution (5,120 x 2,160 WUHD) – a first for OLED monitors. Their 21:9 aspect ratio offers a more immersive gaming experience than standard 16:9 displays while maintaining better content compatibility than 32:9 monitors.
Both products feature LG’s second-generation Dual-Mode, offering customizable aspect ratios (21:9 or 16:9) and picture sizes (39-, 34-, or 27-inches) with one-touch switching between preset screen resolution and refresh-rate combos. With eight configurations, users can personalize their gaming setups to suit their preferences or adapt to different game genres, including FPS, RPG, MOBA, and racing simulators.
LG UltraGear 45GX990A
The LG UltraGear OLED 45GX990A provides a 45-inch 5K2K bendable screen that can be adjusted to the user’s preference. The 45-inch monitor can transition from completely flat to a 900R curvature within seconds. This is intended to offer users display flexibility and more control over the gaming experience.
The 45GX990’s upgraded Dual-Mode feature allows users to switch between resolution and refresh rate presets, such as switching from 4K/240Hz to 1080p/480Hz, and customize the monitor’s aspect ratio and picture size.
With an ultra-fast 0.03ms (GtG) response time, the 45GX990A supports smooth gameplay and heightened immersion. The 45GX990A also has reduced screen tearing for a smoother, more responsive gaming experience.
Although the 45GX990A has an innovative bendable screen it’s not the first time that LG has brought a bendable screen to market. The 42-inch LG Flex bendable OLED TV/Gaming monitor was introduced in late 2022, and previous to that LG and Samsung first demonstrated this technology in 2014.
LG UltraGear 45GX950A
Another standout model from the new GX9 lineup is the LG UltraGear OLED 45GX950A Gaming Monitor. It also has a 45-inch curved screen, but it is not bendable. The curvature is permanent at 800R.
However, it does have a 21:9 aspect ratio, and just like the 45GX990A it has a 5K2K display resolution and Dual Mode with customizable settings.
A 4-side Virtually Borderless design and slim bezels help boost user immersion while adding a sleek aesthetic to any setup. With 125 pixels per inch (PPI) and an RGWB subpixel layout, the monitor improves the readability of in-game text and makes productivity tasks, such as editing documents or website content, that much easier.
Connectivity includes DisplayPort 2.1, HDMI 2.1, and USB-C with 90W power delivery. The UltraGear 45GX950A is compatible with graphics cards and features such as variable refresh rate (VRR) while enabling convenient device charging. Certified by NVIDIA G-SYNC and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro. These features are also included in the previously discussed 45GX990A.
LG UltraGear 39GX90SA
The UltraGear 39GX90SA is designed to deliver both gaming and content-streaming experiences and has 1440p (WQHD) display resolution. Powered by webOS, it can serve as a home entertainment hub, enabling users to access all their go-to streaming services without a PC or set-top box.
Its 39-inch, 21:9 aspect ratio curved (800R) OLED display is designed to produce accurate deep blacks, making it perfect for AAA games and HDR movies and series. USB Type-C ports offer convenient connectivity. Its ergonomic and space-saving L-shaped stand enables a clean clutter-free look. The 39GX90SA supports a 240Hz refresh rate and .03 second response time.
From YS Lee, vice president and head of the IT Business Unit, LG Media Entertainment Solution Company: “The UltraGear GX9 series sets a new standard for OLED gaming monitors, combining groundbreaking display technology with smart features that expand and enhance the user experience,…From the world’s first 5K2K OLED gaming monitors with second-generation Dual-Mode to smart gaming monitors with built-in webOS, the GX9 lineup pushes the boundaries to deliver maximum value and enjoyment for our customers.”
The Bottom Line
LG has made a push in the past few years into the gaming space, touting its OLED display technology as providing the best quality images. To assure buyers, LG has also made a big effort to minimize the effects of screen burn-in with several technologies, such as rapid pixel shifting and pixel refresh. LG also offers a 2-year burn-in warranty for OLED gaming monitors.
We have seen LG’s curved screen gaming monitors several times and had a hands-on demo with the previously released LG LX3 Flex (bendable) at CEDIA 2023.
Of course, for gaming a monitor that provides the visuals is just the starting point, you need great audio, so an audio system and a good pair of gaming headphones, such as the Audeze Maxwell Wireless Gaming Headset and the Beyerdynamic MMX 200 Wireless Gaming Headset are just two options to consider.
