The TDA15500 Single-Chip Solution with the TV505 Reference Design Enables LG Electronics to Offer High Picture Quality in Affordable LCD TV Sets
EINDHOVEN, Netherlands – Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE:PHG)(AEX:PHI) today announced that LG Electronics integrated Philips single-chip solution TDA15500 with its TV505 reference design in the entire portfolio of mainstream LCD TV chassis. Using the reference design in multiple products results in lower production costs, allowing LG Electronics to offer LCD television sets for the mass market at a competitive price without compromising picture quality. The TDA15500 is the first single system chip solution that provides LCD TV manufacturers with features such as video decoding, PC input, picture improvement, de-interlacing and scaling and a microcontroller with teletext.
“Philips single-chip LCD TV solution and reference design allows us to develop LCD TVs for all market segments at competitive prices,” said HS Yoo, Chief Research Engineer and Project Manager, Display Division Research Lab, LG Electronics. “The integrated functions on a single chip with its small and simple board design enable a faster development cycle leading to lower manufacturing costs.”
Philips’ industry-leading one-chip solution targets a market segment with high growth potential for TV manufacturers. According to the Q3 2005 Forecast report from DisplaySearch, the mainstream LCD TV market segment, with screen sizes up to 23,” will grow from nine million pieces in 2005 up to 16 million pieces in 2007.
“In a highly competitive marketplace manufacturers are looking for the flexibility to differentiate their product offering from the competition,” said Jos Klippert, marketing director, Digital TV solutions, Philips Semiconductors. “By deploying our single-chip LCD TV solutions and reference designs LG Electronics can play on the fast time to market and offer LCD TVs at a very competitive price level to drive market adoption of high picture quality TV sets.”
The TDA15500 is derived from Philips’ Ultimate-One-Chip (UOC) third generation solution. The single chip contains an on-chip microcontroller that permits the full implementation of LCD TV systems with a minimum number of external components. Integrating the video decoding capabilities developed in the UOC family with advanced de-interlacing features allows for this easy implementation of the LCD-TV solution and gives customers a rapid time to market.
