New Kyocera Mobile Router Pairs CDMA 1xEV-DO with Wi-Fi to Create a Quick and Easy High-Speed Mobile Network

Kyocera Wireless Corp., a leading global manufacturer of CDMA wireless handsets and accessories, today announced the retail launch of its KR1 Mobile Router. The Kyocera KR1 Mobile Router takes a single CDMA2000 1x Evolution Data Optimized (EV-DO) broadband connection and creates a mobile Wi-Fi hot spot for multiple PCs using 802.11g technology to deliver download speeds of up to 2.4 Mbps. A universal accessory, the KR1 Mobile Router can be powered by any PCMCIA card using EV-DO 3G wireless technology, including the Kyocera Passport KPC650 EV-DO PC card, or by most USB-enabled EV-DO handsets.

The KR1 Mobile Router, a CNET “Best of CES” finalist, may be purchased for $299.99 at http://www.kyocera-wireless.com/kr1-router. Kyocera is offering a $50 mail-in rebate to those who purchase the KR1 Mobile Router online and can provide proof-of-purchase for a Kyocera Passport KPC650 PC card from their wireless service providers.(a)

“The KR1 Mobile Router is the logical extension to our tremendously successful Passport KPC650 PC card,” Jim Kelly, executive vice president and chief operating officer at Kyocera Wireless Corp. “We know many businesses utilize remote or temporary workers and work sites. The KR1 Mobile Router enables these businesses to quickly set up and share a broadband wide-area connection beyond the home office in any remote or mobile environment with a cellular signal.”

Kyocera Wireless, a world leader in CDMA wireless technology, developed the KR1 Mobile Router in conjunction with D-Link, the end-to-end networking solutions provider for businesses and consumers. It will carry the D-Link brand on its front housing.

“We’re pleased to be working with Kyocera on this innovative wireless technology that brings powerful remote connectivity to a mobile workforce,” said AJ Wang, chief technology officer at D-Link. “Our design and manufacturing experience in networking coupled with Kyocera’s strength in wireless lets us deliver value-oriented, next-generation access solutions which extend the boundaries for mobile computing.”

For many applications, the KR1 Mobile Router can eliminate the need for high-cost and fixed DSL or cable connections. Ideal for small- and medium-sized businesses, enterprises or household use, the KR1 Mobile Router provides strong security controls, such as 128-bit WEP encryption and an advanced firewall for protection against viruses, hacking and identity theft.

Measuring 21.5cm x 13.5cm x 2.3cm and weighing 453 grams, the KR1 Mobile Router includes an easy-to-use configuration wizard and Web-based device management using Internet Explorer 6, Netscape Navigator 6 and other JAVA™-enabled browsers.
