PC Gamers Immerse Themselves in Stereo Images from Kopin’s Color VGA Microdisplays; Product Unveiled to Worldwide Consumer Market
TAUNTON, Mass. – Kopin Corp. (NASDAQ: KOPN), the largest U.S. manufacturer of microdisplays for mobile consumer and military electronics, today announced that Shenzhen Oriscape Electronic Co., Ltd. of China has unveiled the CyberMan GVD510-3D stereoscopic head-mounted display (HMD), which incorporates Kopin’s CyberDisplay VGA color displays.
The stylish, lightweight CyberMan GVD510-3D offers users a high definition virtual image equivalent to a 40-inch flat-panel screen at a distance of seven feet. The GVD510-3D enables gamers to experience immersive stereo 3D at an affordable price. The PC-compatible headset can be used with over a thousand games and is now available to consumers worldwide.
“Gamers are excited about our headset’s ability to replicate the large-screen, virtual reality experience,” said Oriscape President Bill Ho. “The CyberMan GVD510-3D capitalizes on the superior image quality of Kopin’s microdisplays in our established video headset line, and is compatible with all PC games supported by Direct3D and OpenGL, the industry’s major language platforms.”
The CyberMan GVD510-3D is built on the “Page Flipped 3D Stereo VGA” signal format which was developed for the LCD shutter glass system. The headset uses a signal format that is available on NVIDIA-based graphics cards for fast market penetration. In addition, this product has a automatic scaling function that makes it compatible with various VGA display output formats and it can also accept composite video and S-Video, which can be driven by the Microsoft Xbox, including the new Xbox 360, and the SONY PlayStation 2 game console.
“We are extremely pleased that Oriscape, one of our long-term partners, is moving so quickly into the untapped 3D virtual reality game market,” said Dr. John C. C. Fan, Kopin’s president and chief executive officer. “Our VGA CyberDisplays are a natural choice for high-quality, lightweight 3D HMD systems. Now Oriscape and Kopin are making it affordable to many gamers.”
Built with nanotechnology, the Kopin CyberDisplay VGA product is the world’s smallest, lowest power VGA-resolution (640 x 480) color microdisplay. The active matrix liquid crystal display packs 921,600 color dots in a 0.44-inch-diagonal size. The device is capable of 16.7 million colors and extends battery power by consuming a mere 60-70 milliwatts of power while displaying a vivid full-color video image. The transmissive CyberDisplay products can use simpler, thinner optics, which are ideal for compact wearable devices, viewfinders for camcorder and digital cameras, and most portable consumer, military and industrial applications.
