JVC Slim Rear Projection HDTVs Announced

JVC Dramatically Reduces Cabinet Depth In New Slim HD-ILA Rear Projection HDTVs; New optical engine allows shallow-cabinet 58- and 65-Inch RPTVs.

JVC brings a new profile to the rear projection TV category with a pair of new sets in its HD-ILA line that feature dramatically reduced cabinet depth. Two screen sizes will be offered, 58 and 65 inches, with cabinet depths of 10.7 and 11.6 inches, respectively.

The new shallow cabinet is made possible by the development of a new optical engine, which will be offered in two new HD-ILA televisions — the 58-inch HD-58S998 and the 65-inch HD-65S998. Both sets bring a new look to the rear projection TV category. Both will easily fit on most stands and furniture designed for flat panel TVs. In addition, the sets- unique side heat dissipation design and side connections allow the sets to be placed flush against the wall, or even hung on the wall for further placement and decor flexibility. An optional JVC stand designed specifically for use with the new slim HD-ILA sets will also be available.

Both sets each use three native 1080p JVC D-ILA devices, LCOS (liquid crystal on silicon) technology developed by JVC that is renowned for its close pixel spacing, which delivers a bright, high contrast, smooth image. These devices are used in a new JVC-developed optical engine that combines a new concave mirror with the refracting lens to create a projection angle approximately 138 degrees wider and about 1.5 times greater than previous JVC technology. The wide projection angle reduces the projection distance by about 40 percent, allowing JVC to slim down the set considerably. In addition, compared to other rear projection systems that use a convex mirror, the use of a concave mirror allows the mirror to be positioned lower relative to the optical engine. This results in a shallower cabinet and allows the cabinet area below the screen to be no taller than on other JVC HD-ILA sets.

Since the new engine uses a concave mirror, the beam is focused prior to hitting the screen. This allows the use of a small beam projection unit, which means that the optical engine interior is better shielded from unnecessary light, increasing contrast. In addition, dust particles cannot easily enter the interior, so the image remains sharp.

JVC-s new sets include all the same technology offered in other HD-ILA televisions, so they deliver the same outstanding image quality for both standard and high definition material. JVC-s Super Cinema Iris with Smart Picture responds to scene content to provide a contrast ratio of 10,000:1 for optimum black levels and accurate gradation in dark scenes. The sets also employ JVC-s Genessa 32-bit CPU video processing, incorporating the fifth generation of JVC-s D.I.S.T. (Digital Image Scaling Technology). D.I.S.T. seamlessly up-scales any video source to display at full high definition 1080p. Standard definition signals are improved through better IP conversion, improved scaler performance and a new PLL system that improves the performance of a composite signal.

D.I.S.T. also includes a Digital Noise Suppressor that detects and eliminates “block noise”, a Mosquito Noise Suppressor that eliminates noise without degrading the image, and a 3D Y/C comb filter with DTV Cross Color Eliminator that uses an advanced 10-bit 3D Y/C separation process to eliminate cross color and dot interference that is imbedded in older source material.

Each set also includes a new ATSC/DRC/QAM/NTSC tuning system with twin view, multi index view, screen freeze and swap picture, two 1080p-capable HDMI inputs, two component inputs and a PC input.

The sets- bass reflex speaker system is comprised of two main JVC Direct Drive speakers and a woofer, each separately powered by 10 watts. Also included is JVC-s AHS+ for advanced voice processing and simulated surround sound, Hyper-Bass for enhanced bass performance and Smart Sound, which maintains a constant volume level as content changes (such as from program material to commercial).

Also new is a re-designed ergonomic illuminated remote control. Button layout has been revised for simple operation, direct input keys provide instant access to the desired input, and two IR transmitters ensure that the remote operates from nearly any angle.

The JVC HD-58S998 will be available in January and will sell for about $3,299.95. The JVC HD-65S998 will be available in March and will sell for about $4,199.95.
