Following is an overview of selected JBL Synthesis components and loudspeakers that will be on exhibit at EHX Fall 2006 at the Long Beach Convention Center, Long Beach, CA, Booth 435 (November 15 — 17, 2006).
JBL Synthesis Electronics Deliver State-of-the-Art Performance
A key JBL Synthesis system component is the new SDEC4000 digital equalizer, which optimizes the performance of a Synthesis multichannel system in any room by the application of ultraprecise multiband digital parametric equalization and leading-edge DSP technologies. In all rooms, there are powerful room resonances that overly emphasize some frequencies and attenuate others. The SDEC4000 compensates for these irregularities to achieve extremely accurate in-room response and the highest possible sound quality. The SDEC4000 has the capability of equalizing up to 16 main and surround channels and four subwoofers.
The SDEC4000 offers a wealth of additional advanced features, including automatic arrival-time calibration for all the loudspeakers in a multichannel system; an Auto-Film-Screen-Compensation feature that automatically corrects for the attenuation in high-frequency output that can occur when a loudspeaker is located behind a projection screen; and sophisticated overload protection.
The JBL Synthesis SDP-40 Digital Surround Processor/System Controller is a THX Ultra2-certified 7.1-channel preamplifier/processor that utilizes advanced digital technologies to achieve the highest possible resolution and fidelity. It incorporates an extensive complement of inputs, outputs and control functions, including high-bandwidth, HDTV-compatible component-video switching, independent multizone operation, advanced bass-management capabilities, and RS-232 ports that enable integrated system control and software/firmware upgradeability.
The SDP-40 utilizes 24-bit, 192kHz audio D/A converters and multiple 32-bit DSP engines for the highest possible resolution, dynamic range and channel separation. It is compatible with popular surround sound formats, and includes Harman International’s proprietary Logic 7 processing, which delivers enhanced surround sound realism with movie soundtracks and music. Its other advanced features include assignable input channels, multiple DC trigger control outputs, rear-panel IR inputs, and internal upgrade slots and rear-panel access ports to accommodate possible future upgrades.
SAM 1 and SAM 2 Loudspeakers: Unsurpassed Sonic Accuracy and Modular Installation Flexibility
JBL’s SAM 1 and SAM 2 loudspeakers are engineered to deliver extraordinary sonic performance and bring the configurable installation versatility of the company’s acclaimed VerTec line-array professional audio loudspeakers to home listeners.
The SAM 1 midrange/high-frequency loudspeaker shares many of the driver technologies found in JBL’s ultrahigh-end K2 Series and Project Array loudspeakers. These include the company’s proprietary Bi-Radial horns, mated with advanced-technology aluminum midrange and pure-titanium ultrahigh-frequency compression drivers, which provide remarkable midrange clarity and resolution, wide dynamic range, and extended high-frequency response to beyond 40kHz.
The SAM 2 employs dual 8-inch woofers that utilize exclusive JBL Metal Matrix technology, in which the aluminum woofer cones are deep-anodized to produce rigid yet lightweight driver diaphragms, providing superlative articulation. SAM 2 woofers incorporate a host of additional refinements, and the crossover between the SAM 1 and SAM 2 modules is active, enabling the tonal balance of the arrays to be optimized in any listening environment.
The SAM 1 and SAM 2’s modular design provides never-before-available installation options. They can be easily attached together using their built-in fastening system, creating loudspeaker arrays in a variety of configurations. For example, one SAM 1 can be linked to two SAM 2s for the left and right front channels, and two SAM 2 enclosures can be attached on either side of a SAM 1 module for use as a center channel array.
SAM 3VC and SAM 3HC: Ideal for a Variety of Home Theater Applications
The Synthesis SAM 3VC vertical loudspeaker and SAM 3HC horizontal center channel loudspeaker are upgraded from their predecessor models to provide superior sound quality in a wide variety of custom installation applications. Both models now utilize the identical Bi-Radial midrange and ultrahigh-frequency transducers used in JBL Project Array loudspeakers, and both incorporate dual 6-1/2-inch woofers with the same Metal Matrix technology used in the woofers in the SAM 2 Synthesis Array Module, yielding increased clarity, resolution and dynamic impact. The SAM 3VC can be used in all home theater loudspeaker applications — as the left, center and right front channels of a home theater system, and as the left and right surround speakers. The SAM 3HC is ideal for installations requiring a high-performance, horizontally oriented center channel loudspeaker.
S4Ai In-Wall Surround-Effects Loudspeaker: Exceptional Custom-Installation Versatility
The S4Ai multipolar vertical/horizontal in-wall surround-effects loudspeaker is a highly versatile surround-channel custom-installation solution. It includes controls on the outside of its sealed enclosure, enabling it to be easily switched to bipole, dipole or direct-radiating operation. The S4Ai’s tweeters and midrange drivers are mounted in movable, internal subenclosures that can be switched to radiate either in-phase or out-of-phase with the rest of the speaker’s driver complement to provide a choice of selectable dipole or bipole dispersion modes. In addition, the S4Ai can be bi-amplified to serve as two separate speakers in a single enclosure, conserving installation space in a multichannel surround sound system.
S1S-EX, HTPS400 and S4S Subwoofers: The Ultimate in Low-Frequency Performance
A selection of JBL Synthesis subwoofers is showcased at EHX Fall 2006. The S1S-EX is an extraordinary subwoofer for the most ambitious custom home entertainment installations. It features a massive 18-inch Aquaplas-treated-cone woofer with true deep bass extension all the way down to 18Hz, to deliver astonishing low-frequency impact.
JBL’s HTPS400 12-inch, 1000-watt powered subwoofer features a compact enclosure that enables it to be easily situated in any room. The HTPS400 provides 1,000 watts of power output, and offers a full range of setup and adjustment controls, which enables it to achieve maximum low-frequency performance in any room.
The JBL Synthesis S4S in-wall subwoofer combines the convenience of in-wall mounting and exceptional sound quality. The Synthesis S4S utilizes dual high-excursion 10-inch woofers and is used in conjunction with the S800 2 x 400-watt amplifier. The S4S fits inside the standard 16-inch spacing that is used between 2″ x 6″ wall studs, and is supplied with a rear-panel back box.
S800 and S7150 Multichannel Amplifiers: Powerful, Versatile Multichannel Amplification
The S800 stereo power amplifiers and seven-channel S7150 power amplifiers used in JBL Synthesis systems combine superlative sound quality with versatile installation options, and are designed to interface with other Synthesis system components for sophisticated automatic control capabilities.
The S800 delivers 200 watts into each channel (into 8 ohms, <0.03% THD), or a massive 800 watts in bridged mode, and the S7150 provides 160 watts into each channel (into 8 ohms, <0.03% THD). Both amplifiers can easily re-create sound levels equal to those of the original performances in even the largest of home-listening environments. The amplifiers interface with the other components in a Synthesis system for sophisticated automatic control capabilities.
JBL Synthesis systems are offered in a variety of configurations to accommodate a broad range of home entertainment requirements. Synthesis systems are available exclusively from authorized JBL Synthesis dealers, all of which are systems integration specialists. The turnkey systems are installed and calibrated by the installing dealer using exclusive calibration software, equipment and measurement microphones.
