During our podcast conversation with Denmark-based Gryphon Audio from T.H.E. Show 2023, we were reminded that Gryphon’s ultra-luxe products start where other brands end.
With that in mind, we learned Gryphon’s newest loudspeaker, the EOS 5, just debuted at the Hong Kong AV High-End AV Show 2023 and will retail for about $50,000/pair USD.
The Gryphon EOS 5 Loudspeaker builds on the foundation of their innovative EOS 2 floor standing speaker, offering even greater full range and dynamics from 20Hz – 40kHz (+/- 2dB).
Speaker Drivers
The EOS 5 is a three-way speaker that incorporates the following driver complement:
The 6.5” Midrange and dual 9.5” woofer drivers incorporate TPCD™ (Thin-Ply Carbon Fiber Diaphragm) cone construction and Impulse Optimizer Rings which first appeared in EOS 2. As with EOS 2, the cones are manufactured by one of the world’s leading fabricators of Formula 1 components.
To round out the driver complement, the EOS features a (29mm) Beryllium Dome Tweeter that has been engineered for EOS 5’s higher crossover point.
The EOS speaker has 90 dB sensitivity with 4 Ohm nominal and 2.9 Ohm minimum impedance. This makes them highly efficient for use with modestly-powered amplifiers.
Visual Design
EOS 5 shares the same type of enclosure style used for EOS 2.
Internally, a line-dampened porting system offers a unique solution to smoothing airflow in this larger, wider-bandwidth loudspeaker. Like the EOS 2, the new EOS 5 benefits from two design flourishes that enhance placement versatility across a wide range of listening environments.
- A three-position Tweeter Level Switch is provided that provides 0dB, +2dB, or +3dB boost to optimize off-axis dispersion providing flexibility in different room sizes and seating arrangements.
- Gryphon’s custom-manufactured adjustable spikes are equipped with removable, integrated dampers to provide the most stable speaker positioning on flooring either with or without carpeting.
Finishes
The EOS 5 will be offered in four finish options: Soul Red Crystal, High Gloss Black, Stealth Grey, and “S-Mat Black.”
Tip: The S-Matte black option feature “Self-Healing” chemistry which, in the event of small scratches, can actually be repaired with the help of a piece of parchment baking paper and iron used at low heat, which encourages the paint to re-flow and regain its normal, unblemished surface.
Availability and Pricing
The EOS 5 will be available in early 2024 with an MSRP of 42,800 EUR ($49,800 US MSRP) through authorized dealers and distributors.
Tip: More detailed specifications will be revealed closer to an announcement of an official release date.
