Comrex, a manufacturer of professional broadcasting equipment, is licensing Fraunhofer IIS implementations of two of the most efficient audio compression technologies standardized in MPEG-4. By integrating MPEG-4 High Efficiency Advanced Audio Coding v2 (HE-AAC v2) and MPEG-4 Low Delay Advanced Audio Coding (AAC-LD) into its studio codec “Access”, Comrex allows to deliver high quality audio over the Internet at very low data rates and with low delay.
MPEG-4 HE-AAC v2, also selected by organizations like 3GPP for audio delivery to mobile phones, provides high audio quality for applications demanding lowest data rates. MPEG_4 AAC-LD, mainly developed by the audio coding specialists at Fraunhofer IIS, features a low encoding/decoding delay at low data rates while providing best music and speech quality.
Harald Popp, head of the Multimedia Realtime Systems department at Fraunhofer IIS, says: “These two MPEG-4 audio codecs are a perfect cornerstone for any professional broadcast application and we are glad to see Comrex include them in their studio and portable Access Codec System.”
The Access studio codec is designed to deliver audio over IP networks in real time. Kris Bobo, Vice President of Development at Comrex, states: “Adding the AAC MPEG-4 algorithms extends the flexibility of the Access product. Customers with managed networks will especially enjoy the benefits of the MPEG-4 audio codecs. We are extremely happy to again be working with Fraunhofer on this project, as development is far less stressful when working with such a responsive company.”
