CES 2023: Displace Unveils World’s First Truly Wireless TV (Updated)

Displace takes cord-cutting to the next level with its truly wireless 55-inch OLED 4K UHD TV.

Displace TV

CES in Las Vegas not only includes the latest and greatest TVs from the likes of Samsung, Sony, LG, and other established brands, but it provides a showcase for new companies that can think of out-of-the-box.

Displace, an in-home entertainment startup will debut the world’s first truly wireless TV at CES 2023 next week.

Displace Logo

Unlike any other TVs currently available, the Displace 55-inch OLED 4K UHD TVs are powered by a proprietary hot-swappable battery system, weigh less than 20 lbs, can be transported easily, secured to any surface with an extra wall mount required, and use Displace TV’s proprietary active-loop vacuum technology.

Tip: It is being reported that the OLED panels are made by the LG Display Company for Displace.

Displace TVs solve many of the common problems associated with large screen flat panel TVs, which can unwieldy, tedious to mount to walls and cause damage, cluttered with wires, and utilize push button remote controls.

From Balaji Krishnan, Founder, and CEO: “Displace completely reinvents the television with its hardware and software technologies, and user interfaces that will not only change the way people enjoy entertainment in their homes but will also advance the entire television industry…We envision a world with multiple displays on walls delivering significant value to consumers wherever they are inside their homes. In order to achieve this vision, it’s important to re-architect television by eliminating all common frustrations and making it extremely easy to secure televisions on any surface inside homes. By realizing this vision, Displace is effectively creating the next computing platform and the potential applications are limitless.”

Displace TV Features

True Wireless Connectivity: The Displace TV is a Wireless TV with no wires and no ports. The TV connects wirelessly to a base unit that is plugged into an electrical outlet and can be kept inside a closet or anywhere within the home. All needed wired source components connect to the base unit, which transfers the signals to the display wirelessly.

Tip: Think of the Displace TV’s wireless connectivity as taking the concept of cord-cutting to the next level.

Lightweight: A Displace TV weighs less than 20 lbs and can be easily secured on a wall by simply bringing it closer to the wall, and with a slight push it will magically stick to the wall using Displace’s proprietary active-loop vacuum technology.

Displace TV Side

Innovative Battery System: Displace TVs incorporate multiple rechargeable batteries that utilize Displace’s proprietary hot-swappable battery system. This means that batteries can be charged one at a time while the TV remains fully operational.

Tip: The Displace TV averages about a month of total battery life for an average usage of six hours of active TV time per day.

Easy Wall Mounting: Super lightweight 55-inch 4K Displace TV uses proprietary active-loop vacuum technology — no extra wall mount required.

Displace TV Back

Modular: The 55-inch TVs can be hung throughout a home or combined to form multiple sizes You can assemble four TVs to form a 110-inch TV with 8K resolution or 16 TVs to form a massive 220-inch TV with 16K resolution.

Tip: This modular approach is similar to that with MicroLED TVs, but uses larger 55-inch panels rather than much smaller panels that take more time to assemble into larger screen sizes.

Control: Displace TVs are primarily controlled by natural hand gesture movements, in addition to touch and voice interfaces, making it easy to browse, play and control content using hands. Push your palm to play; pinch to zoom in or out; or literally, reach out and grab what’s on the TV and throw it onto another Displace TV in the home. Content magically moves from one Displace TV to another when the user moves between rooms via proprietary computer vision technology.

Facial recognition and computer vision technology are also included. This enables content on Displace TVs to seamlessly switch between rooms when users move. A button on top of the Displace TV also enables facial recognition to be switched off for privacy reasons.

Our Take

It will be very interesting to see how to Displace TV will be received by retailers and by the major TV makers (LG, Samsung, Sony, TCL, Hisense, and others) and whether they can make an impact in the market themselves or license the technology to the majors for possibly easier market access. There is also the possibility that the bigger, more financially resourced, TV makers will prevent Displace from being successful by coming up with their own variations of this concept. Lastly, a major question is not only the innovative wireless technology connectivity and control platform but also how Displace TVs will actually look in terms of picture quality.

Update 10/3/2023

In an online presentation, Displace TV stated that it has been making tweaks to its product.

The wall-mount system: It was demonstrated how the TV will slide down the wall safely (Self-lowering Landing Gear Technology) if it loses battery power to keep it mounted or if it detects wall damage, such as wall cracks that might break the wall mounting vacuum seal.

Internal Battery Addition: They also added two internal batteries (in addition to the current hot-swappable batteries) to the system for more wall-mount stability (3 months of power).

Product Shipments and Price: Displace TV indicated that they have postponed initial product shipments until mid-2024 and the final price for Displace TV units has not been set.

CES 2024: Displace TV will be back at CES in January 2024 to demonstrate the new tweaks mentioned above and may have some additional technical updates (gaming, commercial applications, control refinement) as well.

    Pfft… A Samsung Android tablet at Costco runs $240 bucks… add a 512GB SDcard for 50 bucks…

What’s the point of a 50 inch portable TV? Just take a TV, take it to the patio, run an extension cord to it, connect it via WiFi your network and you can be using your Roku, Tablos, Netflix, etc, etc..

And when you’re done, pick it up and bring it inside.

If the TV is not gonna move… then just run a power cord to it.. hide it if you must.

But a battery powered, portable 50 inch TV is rather… nuts. IMHO

      Tony,

Or just buy an outdoor TV from one of the 5 companies offering them and mount it on a wall. Or use an iPad and connect to a portable projector. I’ve done both and they worked rather well. XGIMI makes excellent portable projectors and it’s become our summer thing to use it with my 100″ Elite Yardmaster screen. Far more affordable.
