Did Denon just introduce a $3,000 CD/SACD player? The new DCD-3000NE was announced too late for inclusion in our “Best CD players: Editors’ Choice” list for 2024 (we actually have to listen to one first), but we are rather happy to see this from the Japanese manufacturer. Marantz already beat its sibling to the punch in 2024 with the SACD 10 player — but a quick look at the price difference makes the Denon DCD-3000NE a lot easier to get excited about.
Considering the affordability of used CDs and SACDs in 2024 — the $9,000 price difference feels like an entire music collection that one could enjoy through the Denon — although $3,000 is still not cheap.
DCD-3000NE Features
As a starting point, the drive mechanism is a high-precision Suppress Vibration Hybrid Loader.
The 3000NE supports stereo audio playback from SACDs, CDs, CD-R/-RWs, DVD-R/-RWs, and DVD+R/+RWs (no video for recordable DVDs).
On burned discs, the 3000NE is compatible with FLAC, AIFF, and ALAC up to 24-bit/192kHz, DSD 2.8MHz/5.6MHz, and other file formats such as compressed AAC, MP3, and WMA files.
Pro Tip: Although a growing number of CD players incorporate streaming and network features, the DCD-3000NE is strictly a disc player.
For optimum playback from the 3000NE’s analog audio outputs, the player incorporates an ESS Sabre ES9018K2M 32-bit/384kHz quad digital-to-analog converter. A DAC master clock for jitter-free audio is included.
Additional support comes from Denon’s ULTRA AL32 Processing digital upsampling and filtering technology.
If you want to bypass the 3000NE’s audio processing, the Pure Direct Mode ensures the cleanest audio playback.
To top off the 3000NE’s audio performance, each unit is tuned by a Denon Sound Master.
Connections
- Analog Audio Outputs: 1 x RCA (pair)
- Digital Audio Outputs: 1 x Optical, 1 x Digital
Optical and coaxial digital outputs are provided for CD playback only. The DSD layer on SACD cannot be passed through the digital audio outputs due to copyright protection. In addition, DCD-3000NE does not have digital inputs and cannot be used as a DAC for external devices (such as media streamers).
Comparison
Here is a brief comparison of the 3000NE with Denon’s previously released flagship CD/SACD player, the DCD-1700NE, which is still available..

The Bottom Line
Based on all of the market sales data, CDs are still very much alive in 2024. SACDs were always a niche product but there are more than a few audiophiles who still have a collection of them that they enjoy listening to.
The DCD-3000NE joins the ranks of higher-end players that will accommodate both. However, as a high-end player, the 3000NE isn’t for everyone, and as shown in our comparison, chart, Denon’s lower-priced DCD-1700NE will probably do you just fine. Most would probably be hard-pressed to hear the difference.
However, as much as the 3000NE and 1700NE have to offer, one glaring omission on both is the lack of a built-in headphone amp and output. For $3,000 (or even $1,500) that would be a nice listening convenience.
The Marantz SACD 10 feels slightly crazy looking at the DCD-3000NE — unless you have a lot of money to burn and think spending $12,000 on a CD player makes sense.
If you are looking for a high-end SACD/CD player and have a lot less money to spend and want to stick with the Marantz brand, you might check out the Marantz SACD 30n which incorporates Network streaming in addition to SACD and CD playback for about $3,000.
