North Reading, MA — January 2007 — Britain’s B&W Loudspeakers, known worldwide for its benchmark speakers for high-end audio and home-theater systems, has introduced a new, audio/video application loudspeaker, the VM6.
According to Chris Browder, B&W’s Executive Vice President, “The overwhelming popularity of flat panel TVs has created much demand for slim, stylish loudspeakers. Unfortunately, these same design criteria consequently limit many speakers’ performance, due mainly to internal volume constraints. At B&W, our engineers did a great job of solving the challenges posed by these constraints”
Bowers and Wilkins was among the first to enter this audio-for-video category with the introduction of the extremely successful VM1 speaker in 2002. The VM1’s hit the industrial design “bulls-eye” with flowing curved lines and minimal cabinet depth. The real challenge, of course, was to deliver an acoustic performance worthy of the B&W moniker. Thanks to the innovative engineers at B&W’s Steyning research institute the VM1’s accomplished the task and set new performance standards in the category.
While the VM1’s continue to be very successful, there is a need for an even higher performing product in this category. Enter the VM-6. The VM-6 is a two-way, ported, wall-mount or stand-mount design, which can be placed in either a vertical or horizontal position. The wall bracket and table-top stand are unique in that they are first wired with speaker cables and then the speaker is slid into the bracket or stand to provide contact for the audio signals. This allows for tidy cable routing, which keeps the installation clean and modern. The wall bracket also provides for some side-to-side swiveling to increase the available listening angles.
VM-6 incorporates many of B&W’s heralded innovations including a one-inch aluminum dome Nautilus tweeter with tapered-tube technology, and a five inch Kevlar cone bass/midrange driver that delivers solid bass down to 49Hz (-6dB). These driver elements are based on the same designs found in B&W’s remarkable CM-1, which won the coveted EISA (European Imaging and Sound Association) award for speaker of the year 2006.
VM-6 speakers are available in black, pearl white, and silver finishes with complementary grill cloths of black (black finish), white (pearl white) and mid-grey (silver finish).
VM6 speakers have a suggested retail of $450 each. They will be available in January 2007.
