IFA 2024 in Berlin is underway at the same time as CEDIA 2024 (follow our coverage here) and there is no question that gaming has become very important in the high-end audio space for a myriad of reasons. The gaming market drives billions of dollars into the top manufacturers and it was really not all that surprising when Sony acquired Audeze; the Maxwell is one of the best selling gaming headsets in the category and the acquisition also gave Sony control of one of the best high-end headphone manufacturers in the world with state-of-the-art technology.

Another manufacturer that has pushed rather hard into the segment is beyerdynamic and we are rather impressed with what they are doing; in gaming, studio headphones, and the wireless categories.

MMX 330 PRO

Beyerdynamic has introduced the MMX 330 PRO, the company’s first open-back headset in its MMX gaming lineup. Designed for gamers looking for the best sound, the MMX 330 PRO combines professional studio drivers, improved microphone quality, comfort, and a wide soundstage that delivers a spacious, realistic gaming experience.

The MMX 330 PRO features the same high-quality STELLAR.45 driver found in beyerdynamic’s MMX 300 PRO and PRO X studio headphones.

Sound

In terms of tuning, beyerdynamic says the MMX 330 PRO provides a more balanced bass and treble presentation than its closed-back MMX 300 PRO counterpart, with clear mids and detailed highs — making it easier for gamers to hear everything going in during gameplay.

Additionally, the open-back design of the MMX 330 PRO is said to create a wider soundstage, making in-game environments feel more realistic and immersive. The result is a more natural and spacious audio experience, perfect for gamers seeking an edge in their audio perception.

Microphone

The MMX 330 PRO are wired headphones with a boom microphone. The headset is supplied with a detachable connection cable with 2 x 3-pole mini jack plugs to connect to a headphone output and a microphone input. The delivery includes an adapter for connecting the headset to game consoles or notebooks and other devices with combination jacks.

Due to its cardioid polar pattern, the high-quality 10mm condenser microphone is designed to capture voices naturally while minimizing background noise, allowing gamers to stay focused on the action.

Comfort

The MMX 330 PRO’s ultra-soft velour ear pads are filled with a combination of breathable memory foam and open foam to improve localization and keep the sound spacious and natural.

The buttoned head cushion, made of soft and flexible memory foam, also adjusts perfectly to the shape of your head. The integrated fontanelle recess prevents pressure on sensitive areas, ensuring comfort even during marathon gaming sessions.

With lightweight materials and easily replaceable parts, the MMX 330 PRO is designed for prolonged use without causing gamer fatigue.

Durability

Recognizing that a headset built for regular use will inevitably require maintenance, beyerdynamic prioritized durability and serviceability when crafting the MMX 330 PRO. Engineered at beyerdynamic’s HQ in Heilbronn, Germany, MMX 330 PRO showcases excellent craftsmanship with robust metal parts and scratch-resistant plastic construction, making it a durable companion designed to withstand the rigors of regular gaming.

For easy serviceability, as well as adaptation to different consoles and interfaces, the cable with remote and console adapter fits any use case and is easily replaced along with the earpads, headband, and other accessories. MMX 330 PRO is compatible with PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PC, iOS, and Android.

Initial Impressions

The $299 to $350 segment is highly competitive and the MMX 330 Pro will have to be excellent to rival the Audeze Maxwell. Based on our experience with beyerdynamic’s lineup of products over the past 4 years, we think these could be an excellent alternative for those looking for an open-back gaming headset.

The one thing to remember is that the design means that other people can hear you playing and that might not work out very well in the library or your dorm room if you are not alone.
