Avocent Selected to Chair POPAI’s Digital Signage Standards Group

HUNTSVILLE, AL September 29, 2005 — Avocent Corporation (NASDAQ: AVCT) today announced that Matt Nelson, director of strategic business for Avocent, has been selected as chairman of the Digital Signage Standards Working Group within Point-of-Puchase Advertising International (POPAI), the Global Association for Marketing at-Retail. The POPAI Digital Signage Standards Working Group will establish both technical and non-technical standards for the dynamic digital signage industry. The mission of the Digital Signage Standards Working Group is to provide common terminology standards for the technology, overall systems architecture and systems marketing. These standards will be delivered to the industry through POPAI industry communications and education. The goal of these standards will be to facilitate the adoption of digital signage by integrators, dealers, installers and customers.

Nelson currently is the director of strategic business for Avocent professional audiovisual and wireless products. Prior to joining Avocent, he successfully launched products for Colorado Memory Systems, 3COM, Iomega, Motorola Semiconductor and Time Domain including the world’s first ultra-wideband chipset, and the first wide-area wireless PC card. Nelson holds a master’s degree of business administration and a bachelor’s degree in computer information systems from Regis University in Colorado.

“Mr. Nelson is an excellent choice to preside over the group, because of his extensive background in digital signage, cabling, wireless, display systems and remote computing provide valuable insight on the market requirements which are fostering the growth of the digital signage market,” said Joe Finizio of POPAI.

POPAI’s Digital Signage Group was organized as part of the POPAI structure and focuses on issues specific to dynamic digital signage and in-store networks. The POPAI Digital group will provide industry information, profiles of proven solutions, market research and education to demonstrate the ability of digital signage solutions to inform, educate and influence customers. As chairman, Nelson and the Digital Signage Standards Working Group will have a direct impact in the Digital Signage industry.
