Amazon has become one of the premier destinations for consumers when it comes to purchasing TVs online, but beginning in 2021, Amazon implemented a new strategy of marketing their own branded TVs that also incorporate the Fire TV OS smart TV platform.
Amazon’s initial round of TVs released in 2021 consisted of the entry-level 4 Series and step-up Omni series LED/LCD TVs, followed in 2022 with Omni QLED TVs (initially 2 models), and then in 2023, they expanded their offerings further with additional screen sizes and the introduction of a Series 2 lineup of LED/LCD TVs in smaller 32 and 40-inch screen sizes.
QLED
Up to this point, the 4 Series and Omni Series sets, including the QLED models, are LED/LCD TVs with LED backlighting. However, what makes the QLED models different is that the backlight supports full-array local dimming, and a Quantum Dot layer is placed between the LED backlight and LCD display panel.
That is where the ‘Q’ in QLED comes from. The QLED layer is composed of red, green, and blue nanoparticles. These particles enable a QLED TV to display a more precise color than a standard LED/LCD TV.
Mini-LED
Amazon has decided to go a step further with the introduction of its”flagship” Omni QLED Series TV with Mini-LED Backlights. This means that the LED light bulbs used in the backlight are much smaller, providing more precise control of the light passing through the pixels. Instead of a few dozen, a mini-LED TV can have several hundred or over 1,000 on the backlight panel.
In the case of the Amazon Omni Series TVs, there are over a thousand LEDs grouped into 512 to 1344 dimming zones, depending on screen size.
Shared Features
All models, in addition to what was discussed in the previous section, incorporate the Fire TV OS, which means that you can access all the apps and features found on Amazon Fire TV sticks and associated devices right on the TV.
All models incorporate 4K UHD display resolution with HDR support provided for HDR10, HLG, Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+ Adaptive, and HDR10+ Gaming, and up to 1,400 nits of peak brightness output.
Fire TV Intelligent Picture processing automatically fine-tunes what’s playing, from scene-to-scene. It also adapts to the room’s current ambient light and color.
For gamers, the TVs support a 144Hz refresh rate with AMD FreeSync Premium Pro certification. This supports seamless transitions, tear-free visuals, and fluid motion during gameplay.
The Fire TV Ambient Experience turns your TV into a smart home hub; one can showcase artwork, plan their day with widgets, and easily control other smart home devices using voice control.
Coming Soon: Interactive Art is a new way to engage with artwork that responds to your natural movements.
Tip: All Omni Mini-LED Series TVs offer 2.1 Dolby Atmos audio. However, Amazon suggests it’s Soundbar Plus for better sound.
In addition to the provided remote control, all models can be controlled hands-free with Alexa. Just ask Alexa to turn on the TV, find, launch, and control content.
For those with privacy concerns; and that would be almost all of us who might not want Big Brother listening to our conversations, the microphones on the TV can be turned off.

The Bottom Line
Amazon has rushed forward into the breach with its new Omni QLED Mini-LED TVs. The published features and specs are impressive with Amazon touting that its Omni Mini-LED TVs support up to 1,400 nits of light output and include 512 to 1,344 dimming zones depending on the size of the screen.
On the other hand, the popular Hisense U7 Mini-LED series outputs 1000 nits and 240 to 684 dimming zones, and is in a similar or lower price range (depending on screen size) than Amazon’s Omni models. Both offer 55, 65, 75 and 85-inch screen sizes.
Pro Tip: The Hisense U7 Series is also IMAX Enhanced Certified and Amazon’s Omni Series is not.
It will be interesting to see how Amazon’s Omni Mini-LED sets will sell in comparison to the other brands it also sells on its website. However, so far, Amazon’s own-branded TVs seem to be doing well as they have been expanding their offerings with elevated capabilities since 2021.
