UK-based loudspeaker maker, Acoustic Energy has announced a new subwoofer, AE Sub. Although primarily designed to complement Acoustic Energy’s 100 and 300 Series loudspeakers, it can be used with other speaker systems as well, delivering needed bass for both hi-fi and home theater setups.
The AE100 MK2 was positively reviewed by EIC Ian White, along with the Acoustic Energy AE1 which are his personal benchmark for active loudspeakers below $3,000 USD.
Whilst the AE1 might not require low end help depending on the size of your listening room, the AE100 MK2 will certainly benefit from the new AE subwoofer.
The core of the AE Sub is its combination of a Class D 250-watt (RMS) amplifier with a 12-inch long-excursion, doped, stiffened, pulp fiber driver. With this amp and driver combination, the AE Sub is designed to reproduce bass down 26Hz (±6dB).
The subwoofer enclosure is compact and optimally tuned to support fast, deep, and tuneful bass.
For connection flexibility, the AE Sub provides stereo line-level inputs, LFE inputs, and high-level speaker inputs.
Setting controls include an adjustable low pass filter (40-120Hz), phase control (0-180°), and volume control that makes it easy to blend in with the rest of any speaker system. The AE Sub also includes auto on/off turns the subwoofer on when it detects an incoming signal and powers off after a period of inactivity. This means you don’t turn to turn the AE Sub on and off yourself.
The AE Sub also comes with sturdy carpet-piercing spikes and is fitted with convenient rubber caps for use on hard flooring.
From James Luce, Creative Director of Acoustic Energy: “We’re thrilled to launch the AE Sub to provide our customers the perfect companion for extending the bass performance of our loudspeakers,…Whether enjoying music or movies, the AE Sub delivers a visceral bass experience that has to be heard to be believed. This subwoofer upholds our commitment to high performance, high-value products that make an emotional connection with listeners.“
