Independent company 5.1 Production Services, long a leader in the music industry’s evolution toward multimedia content, made history today with the completion of its 100th DualDisc title, Lauren Ellis’s “Feels Like Family.”
Until now, Los Angeles-based 5.1 Production Services has been one of the music industry’s best-kept secrets. But as demonstrated by a discography of over 300 DVD-Video and DVD-Audio titles by artists including Britney Spears, Janet Jackson, Sting, Outkast, Usher, R. Kelly, Rob Thomas and The Foo Fighters, the company is rapidly shedding that status.
5.1 Production Services has now reached another milestone: it is one of the few companies able to offer the music industry full-service production of DVD-Video and DualDisc under one roof. The music industry is clearly taking notice, as major labels increasingly turn to it for their multimedia production needs.
“Artists and music executives expect more from the people who help them create their albums,” says Bob Michaels, president of 5.1 Production Services. “We’re a high-quality boutique production company that is able to offer full-service DualDisc and DVD music video production that does everything from concept development through audio mixing, graphic design, mastering and encoding to quality control.”
DualDisc, the CD/DVD hybrid launched last fall by the major labels and 5.1 Production’s affiliated music labels, has been met with overwhelming enthusiasm by consumers. In the past few weeks, four titles issued on DualDisc have debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200.
Included in that impressive run is “…Something to Be” by matchbox twenty vocalist Rob Thomas. The DualDisc, 252,000 of which were sold in the title’s first week, features a surround-sound mix by 5.1 Production producer/engineer and VP of Audio Production Gary Lux.
More than 200 DualDisc titles are expected on the market by the fourth quarter of 2005, and 5.1 Production Services is playing a significant role in the product’s rapid proliferation. With its extensive experience in every facet of DVD creation, 5.1 Production’s prominence is expanding as the music industry embraces DualDisc’s multimedia capabilities.
“I’m really proud of what we have accomplished,” says Lux. “It’s because we’re a music company that cares about artists and how they want their music to be heard.”
“Consumers,” adds Michaels, “want more for their entertainment dollar. DualDisc provides that with surround-sound music and bonus features like music videos, ‘making of the album’ documentaries, artist commentaries, lyrics and photo galleries. We know how to make that happen.”
Ellis’s “Feels Like Family” DualDisc, which features the entire album mixed in surround sound as well as lyrics, liner notes, interviews, a live performance video, video scrapbook, photos and ROM content, will be released June 28 on Silverline Records.
“Today we completed the production of our 100th DualDisc title,” says Sandi Taylor, 5.1 Production VP of Sales and Marketing. “As the consumer sees what this format has to offer, it just goes up from here.”
