LG Display Company has revealed several forthcoming TV and video display concepts ahead of the 2022 CES, but now sister company LG Electronics takes the spotlight with actual TV products you will be able to buy this year.
LG TV Tech Tips
- “MiniLED TVs” are LCD TVs that also use LED backlighting, but the LED light bulbs are much smaller, providing more precise control of the light passing through the pixels.
- A “Nanocell TV” is an LCD TV with LED backlights and an extra Nanocell layer to improve color. This is exclusive to select LG TVs.
- A “QNED Mini-LED TV” adds a Quantum Dot layer between the backlight and NanoCell layers in combination with an LCD panel to display the images.
- OLED TVs use Organic LEDs which are self-emitting (no backlight required), producing both light and color (no LCD panel required).
LG OLED
LG Electronics continued its leadership in OLED TVs with enhancements of existing tech, new features, and an expanded range of screen sizes.
LG’s OLED Evo technology is included both G2 and select C2 series sets. EVO delivers higher brightness while maintaining clarity and detail. Powered by LG’s new α (Alpha) 9 Gen 5 intelligent processor, Brightness Booster™ technology enables G2 series TVs to deliver enhanced brightness through improved heat dissipation and a more advanced algorithm.
2022 LG G2
LG’s 2022 G2 Gallery Design series introduces a new 83-inch model and the world’s first 97-inch OLED TV to complement the 55, 65, and 77-inch TVs already offed. The G2 series also provides a refined flush-to-the-wall Gallery Design. These models include a wall mount bracket, but not a stand.
2022 LG C2
LG’s C2 series offers six screen sizes for 2022: 42, 48, 55, 65, 77, and 83-inches The C2 also features thinner bezels for a more immersive viewing experience in addition to giving the TV a sleeker design.
Advanced Processing
Behind LG’s highly-touted OLED display technology are video processors. For 2022, the α 9 Gen5 uses deep learning to enhance upscaling performance and give onscreen images a more three-dimensional quality by distinguishing foreground and background elements from one another. The α9 Gen 5 also expands the capabilities of LG’s AI Sound Pro to provide viewers better audio by enabling the TVs’ built-in speakers to produce virtual 7.1.2 surround sound.
Upgraded WebOS
The latest version of LG’s innovative WebOS Smart TV platform brings maximum convenience and easier content discovery. webOS 22 introduces personal profiles so users customize their viewing experience. Under each profile, users can set up fast access to favorite streaming services, get content recommendations based on viewing history, and receive real-time alerts for favorite sports teams. Viewers can log into their into from the TV browser or a compatible smartphone with NFC Magic Tap.
Room-to-Room Share and Always Ready
NFC Magic Tap can be used to mirror a mobile device screen to an LG TV. Viewers can mirror content from one LG TV to another in the home using Room-To-Room Share, which enables the viewing of cable or satellite content on another LG TV via Wi-Fi without an additional set-top box. The new Always Ready feature turns an LG TV into a media display when not in use. In the TV’s Settings menu, Always Ready is activated with a press of the power button on the LG Remote to transform the screen into a digital canvas for showcasing artwork, keeping track of time, or playing music.
ThinQ AI
ThinQ AI has been upgraded to allow LG’s 2022 TVs to become better smart home hubs. In addition to voice control, and compatibility with other ThinQ-powered devices, ThinQ AI now offers support for Matter, a new industry standard for a more secure and seamlessly connected smart home, which also allows LG TVs to work as a controller for connected devices.
Picture Quality
LG OLED TVs continue to raise the bar for picture quality. The panels used in the LG’s 2022 OLED lineup have been certified by testing agency Intertek for 100 percent color fidelity and 100 percent color volume.
LG OLED TVs match the colors in the original source content and express all colors accurately regardless of how bright or dark the displayed images may be.
All 2022 LG OLEDs are also certified flicker-free by both TÜV Rheinland and Underwriters Laboratories and glare-free by UL.
LG’s OLED panels have also been recognized by TÜV Rheinland for their low blue light performance and are the first to meet the low blue light emission requirement of Eyesafe.
LG TVs make it easier for creators to be accurate as well as allow TV viewers to watch movies as their creators intended. LG TVs are also the first to offer auto-switching to Filmmaker Mode with compatible Amazon Prime Video content. This feature automatically detects and adjusts color settings for movies without the need for the viewer to change the setting manually. It is an industry first and paves the way for future TVs to better support streaming services without imposing additional steps on viewers.
Gaming
LG OLED TVs were the first to support NVIDIA G-SYNC® compatibility and the first 8K OLED TVs to demonstrate 8K gaming with NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 30 Series graphics cards.
With 1 millisecond response time, low input lag, and up to four HDMI ports supporting multiple HDMI 2.1 features, LG OLED TVs are the best choice for many console and PC gaming fans. With added support for NVIDIA GeForce NOW and Google Stadia cloud gaming platforms, gamers can start having fun by simply connecting a compatible controller.
For 2022, LG OLED TV users can easily select and switch between game-specific features and display presets directly from the TV’s Game Optimizer menu. The Game Optimizer menu provides quick access to the new Dark Room Mode, which adjusts screen brightness for a better gaming experience when the lights are off.
Settings for G-SYNC® Compatible, FreeSync™ Premium, and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) are easily accessible from Game Optimizer. What’s more, a new sports mode joins presets for a first-person shooter, role-playing, and real-time strategy games, delivering more details for even more realism.
LG MiniLED QNED TV
In addition to their successful OLED TV lineup, LG Electronics is also announcing their expanded MiniLED QNED TV line-up for 2022.
Utilizing a combination of Quantum Dot and NanoCell technology, these TVs can reproduce 100 percent color volume. This means that color doesn’t get washed out as brightness increase. In addition, mini-LED backlighting provides more precise control over bright and dark areas of the screen, which also contributes to a wider contrast ratio.
All models starting from the QNED90 Series are certified for 100% color consistency.

Just get the OLED.
However, smart TVs piss me off. We have a 77 OLED C1 and 55 OLED CX… or something like that. They look alike, except one is bigger and the remote a little bit different.
The Web OS GUI is different for them… so it’s a PITA. I bought the 77 thinking it would be identical to the 55, but nooooo, so I guess it’s Roku time when we drop Direct TV.
(Note: both of them are on the lastest firmware… ).
Video quality… honestly, why bother with micro dots, etc? Just get the OLED, sit down and enjoy it.
