3 New Vinyl Preorders for July 2021: The Record Lady

New vinyl album releases from Jackson Browne, Leon Bridges and Yola that are worth your attention.

July Album Pre-orders: Jackson Browne, Yola and Leon Bridges

After previewing some great albums last month, the steady stream of excellent new vinyl preorders continues in July with a slew of albums from favorites both new and old. Read on to discover three new albums out in July that are worth preordering.

Jackson Browne – Downhill From Everywhere

Nearly five decades after his debut and seven years since his last release, singer-songwriter Jackson Browne is back with his fifteenth studio album entitled Downhill From Everywhere on July 23. The album was actually recorded prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the themes are as relevant as ever with Browne singing from a reflective place on what he’s experienced in life and the kind of world he hopes to leave behind him. Lead single “My Cleveland Heart” is a shining example of Browne’s impeccable songwriting, with whimsical lyrics that imagine how much less heartache he would have with an artificial heart. The music video even features a guest appearance from indie rock phenom Phoebe Bridgers. It’s an exciting preview of a record that is sure to be a welcome return for Browne fans of all ages.  Pre-order at shop.jacksonbrowne.com.

Leon Bridges – Gold-Diggers Sound

Leon Bridges is finally back with his third album, Gold-Diggers Sound, out July 23. Bridges broke out in 2015 with his debut album Coming Home, a classic soul and R&B record that brought about frequent comparisons to Sam Cooke. His sophomore effort, Good Thing, saw Bridges expand his soundscape, showcasing a wider range of styles that some viewed as too scattered while others embraced (myself included).

Based on the initial two singles off Gold-Diggers Sound, “Motorbike” and “Why Don’t You Touch Me,” it appears that Bridges has put a firmer foothold on modern R&B. Bridges’ signature swagger is on full display; his soulful vocals nestle together perfectly with the relaxed, but fresh, arrangements. The album is available to pre-order from several outlets, including a white LP from Bridges’ online store

Yola – Stand For Myself

After a decade trying to make it in the music business and eventually finding her way to Dan Auerbach, Yola hit it big with her unforgettable debut album Walk Through Fire in 2019. She was instantly dubbed the “queen of country soul” given her incredibly powerful and soulful voice and the unconventional country stylings of her music. Two years later, Yola is back with her sophomore record, Stand For Myself, out July 30 on Easy Eye Sound.

The lead single “Diamond Studded Shoes” reveals another side of Yola, evoking more of a danceable, pop sound without forgoing country tinges like a lap steel guitar. There’s a “classic” element to the song, both in the production and arrangement, that gives it a timeless feeling. If the tracks released so far are a good indication of what’s to come, Stand For Myself looks to be a stellar follow up. Signed colored vinyl is available for pre-order from Easy Eye Sound
