The digital revolution was not kind to Magnum Dynalab; the Canadian manufacturer was one of the premier high-end brands in the FM tuner space for almost 30 years, but it was rather slow to transition to Integrated amplifiers, internet radios, and music streamers.
There are more than a few audiophiles who thought that the brand was out of business because they have been almost invisible on the trade show circuit and it is rather hard to find their products at specialist Hi-Fi dealers.
Things are about to change.
The current Magnum Dynalab Dynamyte Series also includes the MDT-1PRE-Preamp, MD-1ME Multizone Music Engine, MDT-1MS Music Streamer, and there is a new dedicated phono pre-amplifier forthcoming.
However, Jim Richards, long-time owner, president, and driving force behind Magnum Dynalab, has decided to phase out his role over the next two years by bringing the company under the Colquhoun Audio umbrella.
What makes this move particularly interesting is that Colquhoun also owns Axiom Audio and Bryston, two legacy Canadian brands with a lot of dedicated customers across the globe.
Tip: The president and owner of Colquhoun Audio and Axiom Audio is Ian Colquhoun.
It will be interesting to see how Colquhoun Audio markets Magnum Dynalab and how its products will evolve. The Bryston connection also makes us wonder if there will be crossover between the two brands in regard to specific products and can we expect to see Dynalab’s technology integrated into future Bryston amplifiers and pre-amplifiers.
Between Bryston, Magnum Dynalab, and the rebirth of Mirage Loudspeakers — there are some very interesting things happening in Canadian high-end audio.
