LG Display, the sister company of LG Electronics that actually designs and manufactures the OLED TV panels used by LG, Sony, Panasonic, and others for their OLED TVs, also conducts a lot of R&D.
Every year at CES, LG Display shows off some concepts that may be several years away but are definitely work checking out. For example, the press was able to see the prototype for a rollable OLED TV in 2019, which is now available for consumers for $100,000.
This year LG is making another splash with two interesting concepts.
Media Chair
The Media Chair is a concept that combines a 55-inch OLED TV and intimate Cinematic Sound OLED (CSO) with a recliner. Cinematic Sound OLED uses the TV display screen to provide the sound in addition to displaying the image. This technology is already used by Sony in select OLED TVs as Acoustic Surface Audio.
The Media Chair’s Pivot feature allows the viewer to rotate between vertical and horizontal positions so that they get to the most comfortable viewing setup,
Virtual Ride
The Virtual Ride enhances the indoor cycling experience beyond what is currently available. Here, there are three 55-inch OLED screens placed in front and above the viewer who is “riding” a stationary exercise bicycle. The intent is to provide the rider the ability to select from a library of scenic venues to ride while exercising.
You Can’t Get These Yet
As mentioned previously, the Media Chair and Virtual Ride are both in the prototype stage. There are no additional features or specifications available. They are not offered for sale and no pricing is available. They could end up either as viable products or as a CES novelty.
