Disney+ Day 2022 Has Returned: Can Iron Mike Steal Lightning and Thor’s Thunder?

Disney+ Day 2022 is back with movie and show debuts, membership perks, and other possible surprises.

Disney+ Day Logo

Having debuted in 2021, Disney+ Day has returned for 2022 and is being used as the introduction to Disney’s 2022 D23 Expo

Tip: Disney+ Day is Thursday, Sept 8th and the D23 Expo is being held from Friday, September 9th through Sunday, September 11th.

For those not familiar with D23, it is Disney’s “version” of the annual San Diego or New York Comic-con and Star Wars Celebration that is devoted to all things Disney. This includes movies, TV shows, theme parks, memorabilia, and more. D23 is held every two years at the Anaheim Convention Center in California, just steps away from the original Disneyland and California Adventure Parks

Of course, not everyone can attend the Expo, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t get a taste of what it will feature. Just as last year,  Disney+ Day will provide news, previews, and premieres that will be featured on the increasingly successful streaming service that has put Netflix, Amazon Prime, and the newly formed Warner/Discovery on notice that they aren’t the only media streaming platforms in town.

What To Expect on Disney+ Day 2022

With content expected from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm (Star Wars), and National Geographic, here is what to expect on Disney+ Day, as well as more to follow.

For those who subscribe to Disney+, you may be familiar with some of what follows below. For others, this may tempt you to subscribe.

Key titles heading to Disney+ on September 8th, 2022 are discussed below.

Pinnochio

Disney’s 1940 “Pinnochio” is an animated classic, and despite its age, it is still a Disney fan favorite. However, it’s now 2022 and now both Netflix and Disney are bringing out new versions of the story.

Guillermo del Toro is tackling the story for Netflix using stop motion animation, while Robert Zemeckis has remade the story in a live-action/CGI mix for Disney, which will debut on Disney+ on September 8th.  The cast includes Tom Hanks (Geppetto), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Jiminy Cricket), and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth (Pinnochio). It will be interesting to see how both new versions are received.

Thor: Love and Thunder

Thor Love and Thunder

If you missed Thor: Love and Thunder in theaters or want to see it again, starting on Disney+ Day you can see it on Disney+. For home viewing, it is also being offered in the IMAX Enhanced format.

Marvel Studios Assembled: The Making of Thor: Love and Thunder

Once you are done watching Thor: Love and Thunder, Disney+ offers an exclusive peak of behind-the-scenes development and footage of the movie with director Taika Waititi and stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, and more. Includes interviews and set footage.

Tierra Incógnita

This is a new series for Disney+. The story follows Eric Dalaras ( Pedro Maurizi), a teenager discovering a chilling world while searching for the truth behind the mysterious disappearance of his parents. Raised by his maternal grandparents along with his sister Uma ( Mora Fisz ), Eric and his sister decide to run away from his grandparents who have been caring for them and return to the town of his childhood, Cabo Qwert, to find answers in the abandoned Tierra Incógnita park, where his parents were last seen. Disney dabbles into horror elements with this one.

Tip: The film features Spanish language dialog with English Subtitles.

Obi-Wan Kenobi: A Jedi’s Return

If you watch the recent Disney+ Obi-Wan Kenobi series, here is a great companion documentary that goes behind the scenes with never-before-seen footage, other making-of content, including creature and props creation, and other tidbits about the Star Wars Universe.

Dancing With The Stars: The Pro’s Most Memorable Moments

Dancing with the Stars logo

If you miss watching Dancing With The Stars on your Local ABC TV channel you aren’t alone. The reason isn’t that it has been canceled, but moved to a new home on Disney+.

However, in addition to the regular Dancing With The Stars contest, ahead of the next season Disney+ is presenting Dancing With The Stars: The Pro’s Most Memorable Moments. This special features highlights of past winning performances, opening numbers, and even celebrity “missteps”. This special presentation is hosted by series favorite, Derek Hough, with contributions from Kym Johnson, Cheryl Burke, and Brandon Armstrong.

The Simpsons – Welcome To The Club

In this new short, Lisa Simpson wants to be a princess, but in typical Simpson fashion, being bad may be more rewarding.

Frozen Sing-Along and Sing-Along 2

Favorite songs from the popular “Frozen” film series, following the adventures of sisters Elsa and Anna. Featuring the voices of Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, and others.

Other titles coming to Disney+

Remembering on Disney Plus

This is a short film that tries to answer: Where do ideas come from? And where do they go when they’re forgotten? Directed by Elijah Allan-Blitz (a previous Emmy winner), the central character of the story is a writer (played by Brie Larson) who loses an important idea when her phone rings. Portrayed as golden light, the lost idea is found by the writer’s inner child, who takes it on a journey through “The World of Imagination.” This film is the first to make use of a companion Augmented Reality app coming from Disney+. This means that subscribers can interact with the story by scanning the TV at disney.com/Remembering.

Wedding Season

Katie and Stefan, meet at a wedding (not theirs) and fall for each other. They begin an affair, despite Katie already having a fiancé. Two months later at Katie’s wedding, her new husband and his family are murdered. The police think Stefan did it. Stefan thinks Katie did it. The series turns into an action-packed road trip across the UK and the US with  Katie and Stefan on the run while trying to prove their innocence. This series will be on Disney+ globally, Star+ in Latin America, and Hulu in the United States.

The former boxing champion went from being a beloved sports hero to a pariah and back again. The series is currently available on Hulu in the U.S. Six episodes will also become available in the UK and Ireland on Disney+ Day (Sept 8th).

More Perks and Surprises

On Disney+ Day 2022, Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and Disneyland Resort in California will host Disney+-inspired character meet-and-greets, photo opportunities, and more.

Disney+ subscribers and their guests with theme park tickets and reservations will be allowed to enter the theme parks at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort 30 minutes before the regular park opening on Thursday, September 8.

Subscribers will be able to take advantage of complimentary Disney PhotoPass digital download(s) at select locations at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disneyland Resort theme parks that day.

Disney+ may also offer some additional non-announced surprises on Sept 8th, and of course, there are also all the announcements, presentations, and more that will be able to be experienced by those attending the D23 Expo on Sept 9-12.

Of course, Disney not only expects to please current subscribers, but also attract new ones, and you can be sure that the top brass at Netflix, Amazon, and Warner/Discover will also be taking notice.
