Ornette Coleman – ‘Genesis of Genius: The Contemporary Albums’ is Coming in March

Vinyl sets are becoming really expensive but this one celebrating two Ornette Coleman classics is going to sell out very quickly.

Ornette Coleman - Genesis of Genius: The Contemporary Albums 2-LP Set

Craft Recordings had a really strong 2021 with a long list of excellent reissues that sold out very quickly. We suspect that this forthcoming Ornette Coleman collection will be sold out long before the first pre-orders ship in March.

Jazz has really benefited from the resurgence of vinyl; Americans purchased over 40 million new records in 2021 and almost all of us have been forced to wait for our Blue Note Tone Poet Series albums and some of the other reissues that have sold out within a few days of their release.

25,000 copies of the UHQR pressing of Kind Of Blue which were priced at $100 sold out in 2021. It’s completely gone.

This $75 release will be sold out within a week. Guaranteed.

Ornette Coleman - Tomorrow is the Question

Contemporary Records is celebrating its 70th anniversary with the release of the new box set, Ornette Coleman – Genesis of Genius: The Contemporary Albums (2-LP, 2-CD and digital formats out March 25). Available for pre-order now, the sets feature two seminal releases, 1958’s Something Else!!!! The Music of Ornette Coleman and 1959’s Tomorrow Is the Question! The New Music of Ornette Coleman.

Both albums were originally recorded by legendary engineer Roy DuNann, the man responsible for the famously pristine sound quality of Contemporary albums, and have been newly mastered for this release by Bernie Grundman, who himself got his start at Contemporary, mentored by DuNann.

The 180-gram vinyl set, which will be pressed at RTI, has been cut from the original analog tapes to lacquer, with the original tapes also used for new hi-res transfers and mastering by Grundman for the CD and digital editions. The deluxe box sets include a 32-page booklet with archival photos and extensive new liner notes by GRAMMY® Award-winning music historian Ashley Kahn. The LP jackets also replicate the original tip-on versions.

SACD versions of both albums will also be made available exclusively via the Craft Recordings website on the same date, March 25, 2022.
