My mp3 a curtis 256 mb keeps saying to reformat

my stupid curtis keeps saying to reformat i try to but when i go to my compture and press on the drive it tells me to insert a disk or when i right click on the mp3 drive it freezes pleassse help its a curtis 256 mb
