Ipod usb Plugged in but Itunes doesnt say update ipod

umm yea i need to figure this out as soon as possible, i plug that usb bable in then its supposed to ask you something dont it? but mine dont do that and you can click on update ipod i really want to get my music on there!!!! oh yeah my ipod is like the oldest one the big white one so if any one can help asap it would be greatly appriciated
