I hope this helps some of you people out there with DV camcorders that are having issues getting your camcorder to show up in "My Computer". After spending 12 hours of research on the internet and 6 hours of system manipulation, I was finally able to get my JVC GR-DVF21U to work. This fix could and should work for all Camcorders that have 1394 IEEE firewire connection issues.

A Brief history of the problem, thanks to Microsoft:

Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, decided to change the Sidspeed settings for the 1394 IEEE drivers. In short, they screwed up the communication speed so that your camera is not recognized by Windows XP or does not work properly. Here is a link that is supposed to give a workaround from Microsoft that is only part of the solution. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885222/

Microsoft recommends changing the DWORD value to 3

Value Speed
0 S100 speed
1 S200 speed
2 S400 speed (default value)<-- which was set by Microsoft after installing SP2
3 S400/S800 speed (Windows XP Service Pack 1 [SP1] value)

I followed Microsoft's instructions, and for better instructions on how to do this go here http://neowin.net/index.php?act=view&id=26338 . Read everything first before attempting to edit your registry!(Leolo and Hafnium's comments are the ones you want to read)

I set my DWORD value to 3 after installing the KB885222 patch, but that didn't fix the problem. I still recommend doing this patch as it may have contributed to the final correction of my problem.

I next attempted to revert back to the old Windows XP SP1 drivers. Here is a website on how to do this http://www.rme-audio.com/english/techinfo/fw800sp2.htm The idea behind reverting to the old drivers is that the Sidspeed problems will be corrected.

Skip down to where the Author of the website says Back to SP1? and follow the directions from there.

If you do not have the old sp1.cab, you're in luck because here is a zip file with the old ohci1394.sys and 1394bus.sys files http://www.videredesign.com/docs/drivers.zip.

Once I did all of this I turned both my computer and the Camcorder off. Then I turned the Camcorder on in the playback(VCR) mode and started playing some recorded material. Once it was going I turned the computer back on(log in if you have multiple accounts) and went under "My Computer" where finally my JVC Camcorder was displayed.

Here are some links to more information that can be helpful, but hopefully I have covered it for you.

Please post any additions you find to this.

A question to you savvy Camcorder people:
Is this firewire issue corrected in Windows Vista?
