Someone in another thread was wondering about Nikon's 70-300G lens.

I've done about 3,000 shots with this lens and I think it's pretty good, considering the price.

From 70-200mm it's sharp enough for most purposes. At 300mm you'll start to see some softness, which stopping down doesn't help very much.

The biggest issue is chromatic aberration (purple fringing) which is evident at all focal lengths (and in a lot of other lenses at this price level.)

On the plus side, you can grab one for about $US140 (even less used) and the lens is incredibly light, making it perfect for travel.

Lens snobs will shudder, but the 70-300G makes great pictures for the price. You just need to live within its limitations.

Why buy used when the lens is already dirt cheap? :-)

It is a great lens! Specially for those who are just stepping into the world of the Digital SLR. Nice reach and very light.
