The only issue with Linux is that alot of programs don't work on it and you are limited to what you can use. But if you just want to mess around with it as is you can do that too. You can set it up as a dual boot on your computer so you can either use XP or Ubuntu when you start your comp. There is also a stand alone cd version (called desktop edition) that you can run without having to actually install it.
