Today's major issue: DVD recorder DENIED recording of certain channels (HBO, Cinemax)

Today's major issue ... I've heard, can't confirm first hand, that certain (pay) channels (HBO, Cinemax maybe even Pay Per View movies/events) no longer let you record them on a DVD recorder. They put out some kind of signal (a macrovision type of thing for shows) that tells the DVD recorder it can't record it except to DVD RAM which right now can't be permanently duplicated but is built to only watch. Can anyone confirm this and give details ... I'm almost 100% sure about HBO and Cinemax but not sure about PPVs or other pay channels. Any info would be helpful. Using DishNetwork with Toshiba D-R2 dvd recorder.
I record from HBO and Cinemax to DVD-R from a satellite daily and have done so for years. I have used 2 different recorders also, Panasonic and JVC. I don't use PPV so I don't know about that. I saw a post in another forum from someone else with a Toshiba that couldn't record from HBO, sounds like a problem with the Toshiba recorders.

Can you give exact models of the panasonic and jvc recorders you use? I think they're incorporating this feature in the newer dvd recorders.
Panasonic DMR-E20 JVC DR-M10S. I record from a 4DTV digital satellite.

yes, i can confirm 1st hand that HBO Cinemax does deny recording you of recording on Toshiba's D-R2 dvd recorder. i have one and i sure don't like it. i don't know about PPV's. i don't have one. i think showtime lets you record on dvd. not too sure about that. i did manage to record on HBO's on demand channel. it did give a denial signal, but i managed somehow to get a perfect recording of it.
