I have a Marantz 4100 OSE which until now has been fairly well behaved apart from some sensitivity to quality of media and a tendency to skip on dubious stock.
Unfortunately it seems to have gone haywire, and I'm wondering if anyone knows if this is common, likely cause(s) and what might be worth trying (any value in cleaning heads - wishingful thinking - or is it more serious) ?!!
On disc insertion (or power up) normal behaviour is for the player to checks/reads the disc before playback, an annoying annoying process in itself but the issue is that this
* now 'hangs' leading to either flashing 'broken segments' or alternating 'petals and centre' on the display (this is a little picture of the disk broken into wedges around a central dot). Alternatively, it will occasionally play for a short time and then behave as above, and it doesn't seem to make a difference whether is is a commercial or home-burn DVD or CD
* Leaving it in this state long enough makes the display default to a line of dashes ------
* All of this is compounded by being unable to force a draw open on the player, as it has a single button for open/close and seems to wilfully ignore attempts to open. Killing the player at the wall socket and re-starting sometimes will let you rescue the disk.
Any thoughts, speculations and advice gratefully received (no it is not under warranty!)
