Horrible HD reception

We get basic cable in our hi-rise building through MDU communications. MDU provides the service for the entire building. It is not possible to go with another cable provider. We have a new Samsung HD TV. The reception is awful. In our old building the picture was incredible (Comcast).

Forgive my ignorance.

1. Would buying a signal booster/amplifier help at all?

2. Is it possible to use our Yamaha RX-V367 receiver to boost the signal?

The person at MDU told me to get a HR-20 compatible receiver. I think he knew less than me.

What is HR-20?

Thanks so much for helping!

A Google search would have told you that a HR-20 is a DirecTV DVR.

I don't think there is an easy answer to your question since your options are limited.

I had a situation where my reception was only so so for Comcast. Switched to FIOS and the difference was staggering. The FIOS rep told me that my cable line was too old to handle all the transmission. Comcast wants me back (has been 3 years since I switched) and is offering a compelling economic deal but I am reluctant because of the issues I had in the past.

LONGSHOT suggestion.
Try to borrow a power conditioner. Maybe you just have really dirty power and lots of interference.
