There are concerns about the competition reverse engineering a fix and therefore getting it for free. There are also concerns about the legal pressure being brought to bear by dik; and the likelyhood that the civil and criminal cases will eventually result in "cease & desist" orders and "forfeiture & confiscation" orders. if this happens, most FTA boxes will never make it past Customs inspection. With the above situations in mind, it should come as no surprise that most STB's will be left with no support. The product names we are familiar with cease to exist. Therefore even though Dik will win many suits, and many court orders will be issued, the "defendands" will cease to exist. Dik will be chasing ghosts. As gloomy as this all sounds, here comes the good news. FTA will come back, stronger than before. You will see new product names, but this is good because the new products will have no legacy legal issues. Its called starting over. Another new wrinkle will be the on board security chip. The purpose of chip is encription security; basically it does the same thing as the security chip on a DN card, only in this case they are guarding against the competion reverse engineering a fix. The security chip may be imbedded on the board, or may be part of a end user add-on or kit; This will soon be determined by the legal department. The good news here is that the good old days are coming back. The bad news (for all the cheap skates) is that its time to ante up again, and that 5 year old STB you've been nursing along is finally a door stop |
