Bronze Member Username: TerebichanPost Number: 50 Registered: Nov-08 | Paul It's not necessary to have an IP static connection, it's preferable to setup your i-hub static than DHCP it's totally different. With static ip you will be more traceable, i'm not paranoid but i don't like to connect my i-hub to a static address. |
Platinum Member Username: NydasPost Number: 15480 Registered: Jun-06 | People should know that there are two types of IP addresses within the Static/Dynamic debate. Your provider gives you (usually) a dynamic IP address. Some providers will give you an IP address which looks like a static IP, because it remains the same while your modem remains on. The moment you turn the modem off and on again, you get a new IP address. This is still a dynamic address, as viewed by your provider. This address that you get form your provider is preferable as a dynamic address and if your modem has settings for changing the address every so often, you should set it to 20 minutes or so, so that it keeps on changing. The other IP address we are talking about is local. This address is usually 192.168.xxx.xxx or 10.xxx.xxx.xxx These addresses are reserved for local devices within a LAN. The outside world cannot see the actual IP dished out by your modem or router to the peripheral device. This IP address should be EVENTUALLY set to static. Example: Your modem or router gives out 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.255. You have 5 connections, and they will get 192.168.1.2 192.168.1.3 192.168.1.4 192.168.1.5 192.168.1.6 but this will depend entirely upon which one is turned on first. What I normally do is to set the Modem or router to give out a restricted range like 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.150 Then the devices which must of necessity always have the same IP, I give them from 192.168.1.140 onwards, and make these static for each of the device. As I said before, the outside world does NOT see these addresses at all except through the specific port you have assigned for the peripheral device, and this is well protected from intrusion. |
