Bronze Member Username: Leonard15Post Number: 58 Registered: Oct-05 | Hi guys I live about 1 hour west of Toronto and bought an antenna for my tv today and I want to know what channels are available over the air and where can I find them. Keep in mind I don't have an HD tv so I am just looking for regular channels and right now the only channel I can get decent reception is channel 6 (Global). |
Gold Member Username: TapemanNew York Citay in-HD, NY Post Number: 4340 Registered: Oct-06 | Unfortunately I don't know what antenna listing in Canada antennaweb.org is for US only I would check local news paper for TV guide local listings In many cases yo have to move antenna 30 degrees at a time and rescan This might get yo some more channels This is one of the best specs antennas I found http://www.sat-sales.com/proddetail.php?prod=HD_Motorized_TV_Antenna_WA_2608 I know it's too late Usually amplified antennas get more channels depending on yor area |
Bronze Member Username: Leonard15Post Number: 59 Registered: Oct-05 | Actually I just bought a regular antenna that you put on top of your tv and no scanning required just very poor reception. Basically rabbit ears. |
Gold Member Username: TapemanNew York Citay in-HD, NY Post Number: 4342 Registered: Oct-06 | A good amplified Outdoor antenna will get yo Free local signal within 100 miles easily Leo Tell me yo got digital convertor box I'm not sure about Canada But in the US we say good bye to analog TV signal on June 12th That's basically within about 24 hours away Artec is a great qualty low cost box if yo are looking to get one since yo don't have HD TV |
Bronze Member Username: Leonard15Post Number: 60 Registered: Oct-05 | I don't have a converter box as I just bought the rabbit ears today and thought I could get some clear channels but only 1 channel comes in semi clear. Is there any good indoor antenna that is worth getting or is just the outdoor ones that pick up channels? |
Gold Member Username: RiconissanPost Number: 1248 Registered: Feb-09 | Leonard Sankar Without an HD television, you must have a converter box. |
Gold Member Username: DoreenakadjOntario Canada Post Number: 2902 Registered: Dec-06 | Leonard Sankar Here is a site to read up on this subject http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/INFO_SHT/BDT14.HTM full transition from analog to over-the-air digital TV signals. By August 31, 2011, virtually all over-the-air broadcasting in Canada will be digital. The US is moving to digital on June 12, 2009. I live 1 hour N/W from the GTA too |
Gold Member Username: PlymouthCanada Post Number: 9735 Registered: Jan-08 | Leonard Use this site for known the channels Analogic and digital available and the size of antenna for your location: http://www.tvfool.com/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=90 |
Silver Member Username: ElmoxpOttawa, Ontario Canada Post Number: 291 Registered: Jun-06 | but question, how can i put an antenna beside my dish, and use the same wire to bring it into the house? or do i have to get one wire from teh dish and make another hold for the Air antenna? |
Gold Member Username: PlymouthCanada Post Number: 9736 Registered: Jan-08 | Elmo Use this special splitter: http://www.sadoun.com/Sat/Order/Switches/S-UV30-sadoun_combiner_diplexer.htm |
Gold Member Username: TapemanNew York Citay in-HD, NY Post Number: 4344 Registered: Oct-06 | It's not called splitter Dish and antenna can be combined using Diplexer Yo will need a set of 2 diplexers 1- To combine and the other to separate combined signal Check this section on Diplexer: https://www.ecoustics.com/cgi-bin/bbs/show.pl?tpc=2&post=1063352#POST1063352 |
Bronze Member Username: Leonard15Post Number: 61 Registered: Oct-05 | Thanks for the info guys. One more question though would it be worth my while to purchase a coverter box to go along with my rabbit ears that are sitting on my tv or would I still need an antenna for outside my home in order to get more channels. Basically what channels would I be able to get with a converter box + my current rabbit ears? |
Gold Member Username: PlymouthCanada Post Number: 9738 Registered: Jan-08 | Leonard Load this print screen of channels available from your position and the antenne size requiert: |

Bronze Member Username: Leonard15Post Number: 62 Registered: Oct-05 | Thanks Plymoth. Thats strange as the green channels I don't get with the rabbit ears but the one that comes in clear is Global channel 6. All the others are very fuzzy or just plain fuzz. So would the set top box make any difference in helping me get more channels in the green area or not? Just want to make sure as I won't be buying an antenna for the roof but if a set top box can make my rabbit ears acquire more channels then it is feasible. |
Silver Member Username: BernardmiPost Number: 483 Registered: Dec-07 | There is something fishy on this thread. Leonard should be receiving tons of signals according to the map posted by Plymouth and he does not receive anything but channel 6. My question might be elementary but how did you connect the antenna to your TV set Leonard ? |
Silver Member Username: MrgregPost Number: 395 Registered: Dec-07 | Your right Outer because any one using rabbit ears in this day and age is either old or playing all of you for what you are worth. |
Gold Member Username: TapemanNew York Citay in-HD, NY Post Number: 4345 Registered: Oct-06 | Leo Yo can only get these channels with a digital converter box Get Artec from e-bay about $30.00 USD These are all digital channels The quality will be as good as Satellites If yor antenna is not strong enough then get a better quality antenna After all yo won't need to pay any monthly fees |
Gold Member Username: PlymouthCanada Post Number: 9739 Registered: Jan-08 | Leonard This map is for Toronto. Click on this link: http://www.tvfool.com/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=90 Put Toronto in city then enter and you will see a google map, place the red Tag on your right position and you will have the good channels. |
Bronze Member Username: Leonard15Post Number: 63 Registered: Oct-05 | I purchased a TV/FM Indoor Antenna from Circuit City yesterday. It says it boosts signals up to 22db. I inserted the end into the back of my tv where you would plug in your sat or cable into and then just plugged in the adapter and plaved the antenna on top of my DVD player which is sitting on top of the tv. The antenna has a switch where you can set to min and max strength. |
Gold Member Username: TapemanNew York Citay in-HD, NY Post Number: 4346 Registered: Oct-06 | "Circuit City yesterday" Are yo sure it was yesterday Cuz Circuit City in New York closed down a while ago That switch won't make any difference in signal strength or quality Look yor antenna might be OK But yo won't get new digital channels with analog tuner Digital Converter box or Digital ATSC tuner from a flat screenTV/HDTV is what yo need In many cases depending on yor area the indoor antenna will work fine |
Gold Member Username: PlymouthCanada Post Number: 9740 Registered: Jan-08 | King Circuit City in Canada still open. The Outer Limits Are you able to get Radio-Canada CBVT in Digital? |
Bronze Member Username: Leonard15Post Number: 64 Registered: Oct-05 | Well it was the Source from Circuit City where I purchased the antenna. Since I don't have an HD TV would it even be worth while to purchase a converter box as I am only looking to receive regular analog channels that the rabbit ears will allow me to receive. When I purchase I new tv when I'll worry about the HD feature but right now I just want some free channels until I decide to purchase a subscripition if I have to. |

Silver Member Username: BernardmiPost Number: 484 Registered: Dec-07 | Plymouth: Of course I receive CBVT-DT. With Rabbit ears on my Toshiba HDTV. Mind you I live at 6km from the Mt Belair antenna and that makes for a strong signal !!! Also receives it in my kitchen on my Viewsonic Monitor/HDTV set with rabbit ears again. Next to come on the air will be Tele Québec. That should be announced in June by PM Jean Charest. Everything is all set on Complexe G. New antenna, transmitter the works. There is a video on YouTube on this. They used a Sykorsky helicopter to do the job last fall. |
Gold Member Username: PlymouthCanada Post Number: 9742 Registered: Jan-08 | The Outer Limits Please give me the channel number for CBVT-DT, is it 12.1 ? I live on rive-sud and can't get nothing with a antenna on roof. |
Silver Member Username: BernardmiPost Number: 485 Registered: Dec-07 | Yes Plymouth it is 12.1. The transmitter is really on channel 12. All the digital repeaters will be on the same channel as well from Quebec to St-George. A repeater is supposed to be installed in Levis to boost signal along the river (Quartier Petit Champlain), along blvd Champlain and the south side of Ile d'Orléans. If you go on Google Earth and type Canadian DTV (see picture below) you will get the list of sites and can look at their locations Beware of the Ch 67 below. It is the English CBC (CKMI from Myrand Blvd). The French CBVE is atop Mont Bélair |
