| When I record on a hi-fi VCR from my digital cable, I lose the surround aspect from my back speakers. Normally when I watch the digital cable, I have the output from the cable hooked up to my receiver which gives me great surround sound for all of my digital channels. No matter what combination of hook ups I use or any of 3 Hi-Fi VCR's that I use, I lose the surround when recording. Is this common because I don't have a digital VCR or is there something I am missing? Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Derek | I've seen this before if a digital audio connection is used and it is truely Dolby Digital 5.1. One of my Denons produces NOTHING on the analog outs for the VCR. My other one simply pulls the left and right fronts and sends that to the analog outs (no downmix). You could use analog audio to your receiver from the cable box. You would be listening to Pro-Logic and not DD but it would work. You could also set the digital cable box to downmix the DD to Pro-Logic. Again, you loose DD. In both cases your surround would work though. Hope this helps. |

James Woll | I figured it out!! If I send the video and audio to the VCR using dubbing cables and record using the Line 1 Input on the VCR instead of channel 3 the surround sound records as well. HBO taped movies and shows now will sound so much better. |

Unregistered guest | Here is what I recommend to be able to watch something and record at the same time. This only works if you want to watch an analog channel while using your box to record. Split the cable line as it comes in to the house before you get to the cable box. Then use an A/B switch to show on the TV what you are watching, the analog channel or the digital cable. The only way I know to watch something while recording something else if all your channels are digital is to get another digital box and split the line like I just said with each line going to each box. As far as leaving your box on to record something. My digital cable company has added a timer function to the cable where you can set your cable box to come on to a particular channel for a certain amount of time that you also set. Hope this helps. |

However, when my VCR is turned on, I lose picture no matter what channel the cable box, TV or VCR are set to. How can I record to my VCR and if it requires me to set a channel, what do I do when the channel I want to record is really high, like 550, and my VCR channel does not go that high? |

Right now, it records but when you go to watch it- it is all fuzzy. We think we have it all hooked up correctly. Unregistered guest | I record through the audio/video connection of my VCR, not an RF connection into channel 3. My digital cable box has both 5.1 and standard (separate left and right) outputs so all I did was have the 5.1 go into my receiver and the standard directly into line one of my vcr (video output also goes directly from the cable box to line one since the box has a separate S-Video output which I use for the TV). If this is your set-up, be sure that the audio setting on your cablebox is set to "other" and "narrow" otherwise the volume down mixed from a 5.1 broadcast will be very low. Also note audio from certain stations might not come through using just a 5.1 hookup, so in that case simply use the audio out from your VCR when watching TV. |

Connect from the cable box out to the VCR in, then set the VCR to line. If not then the VCR should be set on whatever channel you have the TV on to watch the cable box. |

Unregistered guest | VHS recording from digital. I had the same problem. Also, 3 digit numbers. Here is what to do. Program vcr timer for a time span, say 3:00 to 7:00. Use channel 3 only! Then, autoselect each program you want to tape using the digitall remote and the digital guide. Took me 2 weeks to figure this out. Hope this helps you all! |

If it's a standard VHS, connect RCA jacks from the satellite/cable box to the VCR and set the VCR to line. Look for an input button on the remote, or go through the channels till you get to line. |

Unregistered guest | The other day I ordered the NHL center-ice package and it came on fine, but then afterwards the digital On-Demand function didn't work. I called about it and sent out a cable guy to fix the problem, he didn't. Today a different cable guy came out and resolved the problem. In the process I got a different digital cable box. Now when I try to record a movie from the On-Demand feature the picture fades in and out. It only happens when I try to record. when I press the "pause" button on the vcr remote it stops fading in and out. I can watch the movie fine as long as I don't try to record it. Is this something new in Digital cable to prevent recording copyrighted movies? Like Macrovision? My question is- Is there someway around this? I love to record movies, for my own personal use and would miss recording movies for my collection. |

Unregistered guest | I think I took care of the problem, I simply switched my VCRs, I took the one from the bedroom and put it in the living room and attached all wires and cables as before and am now recording a movie just fine. Thank you for your input Mr. Massey. Here's my theory: The other VCR is sending some kind of signal to the cable box and it then knows when the VCR is recording. The VCR I switched it with is an older model and doesn't have the same capabilities and voila! no problems anymore. I will definitly be back with any and all questions that I may have in the Future. Thanks a lot! |
