I cant get my VCR to record at a certaint time

I keep telling it to record at a certain time and stop a few minutes later. It never starts recording. I have the date and time correct. I know it can record because when I press record it will do so. It just wont at a certain time. I have a JVC VCR

Are you pressing the "TIMER" button on the remote, and do you see a clock symbol on the VCR's front panel display?
