If there is no light, you will have to jtag. It is probably not worth it,

jtag is a somewhat complicated process for a novice. It also entails cost of $30-60 and probability of failure.
You could get a new Captiveworks for $70.

You can go to a site like

and a few others and find about jtag kit and procedure.

I Jtag 2 of my units after no-lights, with success . You need to get a cable ( I found mine on Ebay ), then follow the procedures and use various programs ( wall, etc ..) .

If you are NOT computer litterate, I agree that you should get a new unit.
