Although some television companies have tried to send the message that non-HDTVs will be worthless by 2010, this actually is not true. What is true, however, is that you may need to purchase some special additional equipment in order to receive the signal for your television. Since the switch from analog to digital is a process being enforced by the government, the government is actually helping people make the switch. In fact, the Digital Television Transition and Public Safety Act has $900 million set aside to help people make the switch. Most of this money will be used toward coupons, which will be used to help consumers better afford the purchase of the converters. Each of these coupons will be worth $40 when used to purchase a converter. Though there are no income restrictions for these coupons, only two per household will be allowed. In addition, the coupons are only going to be dispersed through the mail. In this way, the government hopes to better monitor the coupons and make sure only two are sent to each household. Coupons for the converters will start to go out on February 17th. If you aren't certain if you need a converter or not, you will need to consult with your television manual or look at the actual television. If your television is described with any of the following terms, you don't need a converter: A· ATSC A· Digital Receiver A· Digital Tuner A· Digital Tuner Built-In A· DTV A· HDTV A· Integrated Digital Tuner If you do need a converter, they are easy to hook up. In fact, they hook up to your television in basically the same way as a DVD player. If you are interested in getting one of these coupons, you can call a 24 hour hotline at 1-888-388-2009. 3 Responses to 'Getting an HDTV Converter for Your Television' 1. this converter will give your tv hd ablity. By rose on Mar 26, 2008 2. No, it will not. It will simply convert a high quality HDTV signal to a low quality analog signal that your TV understands. By hdtvlabs on Mar 26, 2008 That is correct. If you do not have an HDTV it is not capable of displaying in HD. Basically all channels will be broadcast in HD in the near future. What this means is that a converter box will be necessary to downconvert the signal into a usable analog signal for your tv. Without the box all you are going to see on tv is scrambled signal.
