This avoids complicated and troublesome connection of components. Multi-channel DVD-Audio playback brings 6 channels of incredibly powerful and realistic surround sound to living rooms everywhere. Panasonic DVD-S97S Key Features HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a new interface standard for digital transmission of video and audio signals. With HDMI, the signals are not compressed. Transmission is direct and "pure" -- free of the degredation and noise that occur with analog signal transmission. This new interface supports image resolution all the way up to 1080p. HDMI is particularly well suited for images that will be viewed on plasma display panels, LCDs and other equipment that uses all-digital image processing. In terms of sound, HDMI is ideal for DVD-Audio and other high-quality digital formats. It accurately transmits even the most delicate signal components contained in high-quality audio signals. The result is superb sound, whether the source is two-channel or multi-channel. HDMI is simple to use, too, requiring connection of a single cable. With all these advantages, HDMI is the ideal interface for today's age of steadily advancing digital A/V equipment and media. HDMI, the HDMI logo and High-Definition Multimedia Interface are trademarks or registered trademarks of HDMI Licensing LLC. Multi-Channel DVD Audio Playback DVD-Audio is nothing less than the new world standard for super-high fidelity sound. You've never heard anything like it! On the outside, these discs look just like familiar CDs. But DVD-Audio discs offer incredible storage capacity (approximately 7 times the amount of information on a CD), and ultra-high performance stereo sound you won't find in any other home audio technology. And the multiple channel stereo sound captures the acoustics of the best concert halls. DVD-Audio represents a major step forward in audio reproduction. Recorded music sounds live, with true definition, dynamics and room tone. Sounds so clear and so real, you won't believe your ears! Ultra-High Performance Stereo Sound: DVD-Audio has a sampling frequency 4.3 times greater than an audio CD, and has 256 times finer resolution. This translates to amazing 2-channel stereo sound not even approachable by audio CDs. DVD-Audio offers up to 24-bit quantization and 192kHz sampling (versus 16-bit and 44.1kHz for audio CD), which yields extremely high resolution and extraordinary dynamic range up to 144dB (versus 96dB for audio CD). Higher frequency response means outstanding clarity and realism in your recordings -- giving you that uncanny feeling of "being there." All of the 2004 Panasonic home DVD decks above support 2-channel DVD-Audio Playback. Multiple Channels: In addition to incredible 2-channel stereo sound, DVD-Audio is capable of delivering spectacular 6-channel surround sound using linear PCM (uncompressed data, as with audio CDs). Artists who take advantage of this multi-channel capability will be able to better capture the acoustics of the best concert halls or cozy clubs, for reproduction right in your own living room. For extremely realistic and spacious reproduction of your favorite music recordings, frequency response extends up to 96kHz, and has an extraordinary dynamic range of up to 144dB. Instruments with higher range frequencies (cymbals, flutes, etc.) shine through with a richer, more authentic timbre, and music with rapid, high-pitched passages shows excellent definition within the individual notes. The Panasonic DVD-S97S supports multi-channel DVD-Audio playback. Advanced Progressive Scan Progressive scanning doubles the scan lines of an interlaced signal (from 480i to 480p) by scanning all 525 lines in 1/60 of a second for each pass. These Panasonic DVD decks feature Advanced Progressive Scan, resulting in an extended frequency response, reduction of background noise and enhancement of depth. The higher-density video signal brings a film-like quality to DVD images, extraordinarily close to the way they originally appeared in the cinema, with rich detail, incredible depth of field, and precise color reproduction. The high resolution picture is also free of motion artifacts. With the rising popularity of high definition televisions and their ability to accept and reproduce a progressively scanned DVD picture, Panasonic's progressive scan players are positioned to take full advantage of this growing format. 720p/1080i Upconversion When the Panasonic DVD-S97S is connected to an HDMI-compliant monitor, standard 480p DVD images can be upconverted to 720p or 1080i for output, resulting in pictures near HDTV in quality. The converted images have a much higher resolution than the 480p images of conventional component output. You get beautiful high-resolution images that are prefect for today's large-screen HD plasma display panels, LCDs and LCD projectors. Variable and Auto Zoom Depth Enhancer Enjoy sharp images with incredible depth with this advanced noise reduction system. Conventional systems process the entire image, including portions of the image that are already fine. This can actually degrade the quality of those portions. Panasonic depth enhancer technology processes only the background, where noise is often a problem, and doesn't touch the skin tones or delicate details of your main subjects. You get images with startling depth and true-to-life skin tones, as well as a soft, movie-like background focus. MPEG Digital Noise Reduction (MPEG/3D) During Playback, advanced 3D-DNR circuitry effectively and selectively removes only noise components from the signal. The result is stunningly clear image reproduction. 216MHz 11-bit Video Digital-to-Analog Converter The DVD-S97S's 216MHz 11-bit video D/A converter features an extremely high sampling frequency of 216MHz, with 8x oversampling of the DVD video signal, resulting in the most finely detailed D/A conversion. Picture Mode Options include Normal, Cinema1, Cinema2, Animation and Dynamic. Cinema mode combines brightness control with picture noise canceling to provide better picture quality in certain viewing conditions. It lessens glare, giving you colors that are more cinema-like and picture resolution that is gentler to the eyes. Cinema mode also improves the visibility of details in dark scenes by automatically adjusting picture contrast, and helps to suppress color smearing, as well. Picture Control Brightness, Color, Contrast, Sharpness, Gamma Correction. Monitor Select For optimum viewing enjoyment, the monitor select function lets users choose the best connection option according to the type of display being used, whether it's a direct-view television, rear-projection monitor, plasma screen or video projector. Switchable Component Video Out (480p/480i) A picture-enhancing advancement in DVD-Video technology. It keeps the black and white, red, and blue signals of the video image intact (and separate) during transmission, to maintain incredibly high picture quality. Thanks to component video out, these DVD players produce images with higher resolution and more accurate colors than conventional DVD-Video players. Black Level Control DCDi Directional Correlational Deinterlacing, known as DCDi is state-of-the-art video processing technology invented and patented by Faroudja. DCDi eliminates the jagged edges that appear when standard interlaced video is viewed on progressive scan displays. This produces images that look smooth and natural. HDCD Playback High Definition Compatible Digital (HDCD) is a patented encode/decode process for delivering the full richness and detail of the original microphone feed on Compact Discs and DVD-Audio. HDCD has been used in the recording of more than 5,000 CD titles, which include more than 250 Billboard Top 200 recordings and more than 175 GRAMMY nominations. HDCD-encoded CDs sound better because they are encoded with 20 bits of real musical information, as compared with 16 bits for all other CDs. HDCD overcomes the limitation of the 16-bit CD format by using a sophisticated system to encode the additional 4 bits onto the CD while remaining completely compatible with the existing CD format. HDCD provides more dynamic range, a more focused 3-D soundstage, and extremely natural vocal and musical timbre. With HDCD, you get the body, depth, and emotion of the original performance not a flat, digital imitation. Multi-Source Re-Master Using 1/f algorithm technology, this original Panasonic feature compensates for the frequencies of the higher harmonics that are lost during recording due to compression technology such as AC-3, which is used for DVDs. Since these harmonics transmit subtle nuances of sound, this is a key technology for achieving movie theater ambience with a Home Theater system. It's also effective during playback of CDs and other sources, particularly if the recording format is high-compression such as WMA or MP3. 8-Channel 192kHz/24-bit Digital/Analog Converter DVD-Audio's extreme fidelity comes from its much greater sampling rates and bit depths. In fact, at its 192kHz/24-bit maximum, DVD-Audio can reproduce high frequencies up to 96kHz, nearly five times the audio spectrum, while achieving dynamic range of 144dB. These high-frequency components of the audio signal beyond 20kHz play key roles in communicating delicate musical nuances, hall ambience, and soundstage imaging. Channel Balance Control Delay Time Control Audio Only Circuit Protection against noise is provided by the Audio Only circuit that isolates the audio circuitry from the video circuitry. The result is exceptionally pure signal reproduction. Built-in dts and Dolby Digital Decoders With Speaker Setting The DVD-S97S is equipped with built-in dts and Dolby Digital decoders, eliminating the need for an external decoder. When you play DVD-Video discs encoded with Dolby Digital soundtracks, the decoder processes all six channels of audio information (left front, right front, center, left-surround, right-surround and low-frequency-effects). And, the built-in decoder lets you control speaker configuration, delay time, master volume and speaker level control. With the proper audio components, you'll enjoy the exceptional fidelity of discrete 5.1 channel surround sound. Offering incredible digital surround sound, dts (Digital Theater Sound) is the sound system of choice for many movie theaters. This Panasonic DVD player is also equipped with a built-in dts decoder. Built-in Dolby Pro Logic II Decoder Provides multi-channel sound with regular 2-channel sources as well as with Dolby Surround encoded sources. While Dolby Pro Logic reproduces monaural 100Hz-7kHz rear surround channel, Dolby Surround Pro Logic II reproduces two stereo 20Hz-20kHz rear channels. It creates a more natural 5.1-channel sound for a new level of Home Theater entertainment. Two Digital Audio Outputs (One Optical, One Coaxial) Minimize electrical noise, assuring the reliable transfer of high-fidelity sound data to help provide a clear digital signal. Advanced Virtual Surround Sound (Two Modes) Even without an elaborate home theater system, you can still enjoy the thrilling sounds of the movies thanks to Advanced Virtual Surround Sound. This Panasonic technology creates the surround sound effect by simulating surround-channel sounds using only two front speakers!* * Works with Dolby Digital 2, 5 and 5.1 channel discs only. Dialogue Enhancer Most of the movie dialogue recorded in surround sound formats (either Dolby Digital, DTS or Dolby Pro Logic) is heard through the center channel speaker. At times, dialogue can be overwhelmed by particularly loud sounds emanating from the other speakers in your surround sound system. The dialogue enhancer increases the center channel volume (relative to other channels), making movie dialogue easier to hear and understand. Headphone V.S.S. (Virtual Surround Sound) Dynamic Range Compression DVD-RAM and DVD-R Playback The DVD-S97S can play DVD-RAM optical discs, which support real-time MPEG2 compressed video recording and Dolby Digital 2-channel audio recordings. And, since both Panasonic's DVD video recorder and DVD camcorder use the DVD-RAM format, you can play their recordings with this home player. Multi-Format Playback AThe DVD-S97S features multiple format playback of DVD Video, DVD-Audio, HDCD, DVD-R and DVD-RAM, CD-R and CD-RW, as well as MP3, WMA, JPEG and HighMAT. One-Touch A/V Enhancer Just touch a button and A/V Enhancer makes the optimal settings for either movies or music. For example, say that you're watching a movie with two-channel sound. A/V Enhancer would set the player to Advanced Surround Sound, which gives the two channels a surround effect; Depth Enhancer, which deepens the images; and Cinema Mode, which adjusts the image tone to closely duplicate the look of film. It's all done automatically. Just sit back and relax while A/V Enhancer gives you the best possible picture and sound. DVD-RAM Speed Control Playback Slow and Fast Audio Playback Direct Navigator Playback Function for DVD-RAM Find desired programs fast. Just press the Direct Navigator button to display thumbnails of all the programs on a disc. Then select the one you want and press ENTER. It's that easy. Hi-Speed Smooth Motion Scan This feature provides crystal clear scan quality in five speeds, ranging from slow motion to high speed, in both forward and reverse. At the highest setting, you can search at an incredible 200 times the normal speed in order to rapidly locate desired points on a disc. Progress Indicator Displays a scale at the top of the screen for at-a-glance confirmation of your current playback location and remaining play time. Quick Replay Allows you to jump back 7-10 seconds during playback just in case you missed something, or want to see it again. Position Memory up to 5 Discs Lets you eject a disc part way through a movie and later resume viewing from that same point. This handy functions remembers the location where viewing was interrupted for up to 5 discs -- a true convenience for a family with a wide range of tastes in entertainment. Sleep Timer Don't worry if you fall asleep while watching a movie -- as soon as it ends, this function automatically switches power off to save energy. Quick Guide Set Up Lets you easily adjust troublesome initial settings such as screen size, subtitles or no subtitles, and language. You simply follow the onscreen guidance. New Graphical User Interface Audio/JPEG Navigation Menu Enables you to quickly search for JPEG, MP3 and WMA files recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs via an on-screen menu with online confirmation of file folders. This function also works with CD-R discs that feature multi-session recordings. Twin Laser Pickup for DVD/CD Playback Using one objective lens with two laser units having different wavelengths optimized for DVD and CD reproduction, this advanced pickup can also play CD-R/RW discs. The integrated design of the Twin Laser Pickups DVD unit reduces noise pickup by using an OSIC (optical electric IC) with built-in I/V amp. This highly sensitive state-of-the-art optical pickup is made possible by Panasonic's advanced optical device technology. Easy to Operate One-Touch Remote Control The large cursors make DVD software menu operation incredibly simple. Better still, often-used keys are laid out around the cursors, so you can perform more operations with a single finger. Here is info from the TOSHIBA website. http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/service/ownersofSD-5960.asp You might want to call BHVIDEO http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home/ They might have a release date. But took it off thier web site. 1-800.606.6969 / 212.444.6615 I got the Panasonic S97 description here But they also removed it from thier web site. -http://videodirect.com/ (1-800-368-5020) They wanted to take my credit card months ago to reserve one! Here is info from TOSHIBA.com ------------------------- Information for Owners of SD-5960 DVD Players. To ensure the satisfaction of our customers and to maintain the integrity and quality of our products, Toshiba is issuing an important product update. The Toshiba SD-5960 DVD Player is one of the first DVD players on the marketfeaturing the next-generation High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMIT). Unfortunately, recent testing of the SD-5960 with several manufacturers'HDMI receivers revealed inconsistent HDMI performance. Because Toshiba is committed to quality, and because we are not satisfied with the performance of the SD-5960, we are offering you the opportunity to return your SD-5960 DVD player to Toshiba in exchange for a full refund of your purchase price. ------------------------ ----- Original Message ----- From: "eCoustics.com Message Board" <auto-reply-bbs@ecoustics.com> To: <nysoftwareman> Sent: Monday, August 09, 2004 12:06 AM Subject: Panasonic s97 > ----------------------------------------------------------- > > That was a great description of the S97 you posted.
