This kind is like a metal detector
It looks for magnetic polarity
It won't tell yo what signal is what

What I normally do
I use a receiver along with this sat finder and a small TV
Some Receivers can tell yo what sat#
I find what I want in less than 5 minutes
I also turn on beep option from receiver if yo got that option it speeds up my sat search process C-band or Ku band or both

It is an important tool cuz it has sensitivity adjust
I don't do without
It worth the $10 or whatever it sells for

I found that it was pretty easy without one and this is only my second time tunning in a dish. I took mine back to radio shack.

use the dishpointer.com to roughly set the antenna.

use the receiver to locate the sat.

use the sat finder to fine tune the antenna.
