The Fight Network has received official confirmation that Diego Corrales, one of the most exciting fighters in boxing history, died in a motorcycle accident Monday night, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
"He has a motorcycle helmet on his head right now, but he's lying under a sheet on the ground. Diego Corrales is dead," Gary Shaw, Corrales' promoter, somberly informed The Fight Network early Tuesday morning from New Jersey.
A three-time world champion, Corrales unified the WBC and WBO lightweight titles against Jose Luis Castillo, exactly two years ago from the day of his death, in one of the most improbable, and thrilling, victories in boxing history.
"He was a true warrior," Shaw said of the 29 year-old Corrales.
"If he could get up off the ground right now, he would. He was a reckless, exciting fighter, who always gave it his all for his fans."
