Could someone share their knowledge and experience in regards to getting say a Sony or Oppo DVD player that upscales to 1080i or a Samsung that upscales to 1080p. The tv is 1080p. I do believe, however, that with a 1080i signal the tv will further upscale to 1080p? Would there be much of a difference in quality going either route to 1080p. thank-you |

The Denon DVD-2930CI as well as the Toshiba HD-A1 and the Oppo DV-970HD all sound like the performance leaders at this time. The Toshiba HD-A1 is HD-DVD ready and is a blue laser unit. It also is rather a complex unit with a computer and hard drive inside of it. It is middle of the road in price. The most expensive unit is the Denon DVD-2930CI and it appears to be a flawless performer and of high quality. It has the most output connection types. It is not a HD-DVD player. The least expensive unit is the OPPO DV-970HD and it is rather rare in the marketplace. The reviews about it state that it appears to be cheaply made and feels cheap. It is a solid performer from the reviews. I have personal experience with the Samsung DVD HP-960 which does up convert to 1080i / 1080P. The video feed to my HDTV is via HDMI and the audio is via Optical. It plays Dolby 5.1 and DTS flawlessly thru my Denon AVR. It is simple and easy to use. In relation to the above playrs it is just below the Oppo in price and in build quality is higher. Actually I got mine for about $100 from a Brick and Mortar shop. It works well with my Samsung LCD. |

Of all the players listed by others above, the Denon 2930CI blows the rest away. The new Oppo does not even perform as well as its older brother and Samsung would not know how to make a DVD player if Denon dropped the plans on their desk!
